So I might be slightly retarded, but I can't seem to figure out the right cap and rotor to replace the ones on the mopar electronic ignition conversion on my 62 Newport 361. Anyone know the year and or car/engine that will get me the right part at the idiot desk in the parts store? Whatever the last guy gave me has too much clearance between the rotor and the cap and isn't firing at all...

Ok. Decided to stick with the stock torsion bar suspension, but I am still not a fan of the steering...Anyone done or heard of a rack and pinion upgrade? I have been looking at the custom length setups, which would give me the exact geometry needed to keep bump steer at bay...Anyone have any experience with this?

Split from another thread...I am looking to get more seat of the pants and more economy from my 62 Newport...I need to rebuild my tranny anyway, so I was looking at upgrading or modifying my current setup...SO how hard is it going to be to swap in a latemodel 5 speed auto into my current setup? Will it even come close to mating up to the 361? What about a gear vendors unit behind a 727? I really want to go overdrive, and am just looking into options....Anyone done this?

Split from thread in drivtrain: I am planning on upgrading my 361 to something with more grunt, and I would really like to go fuel injection for drivability...So I was thinking latemodel Hemi with the multi port EFI out of a newer car or truck...OR I could get a 440 or the like, and upgrade with a FAST EFI kit or something like that. In the end, the kits would probably be about the same amount of money, but the Hemi swap would be much more work. I am looking for about 350-400 horsepower, and economy is a factor although not a make or break...Thoughts?

OK. A split from another thread in drivetrain....I am planning a Mustang II front suspension swap on my 62 Newport...It will cost less to do this swap than to get new tortion bars, a complete front suspension upgrade/rebuild, and a front disk brake swap. The kit I am looking at has new disk brakes, and the Mustang II is a suspension I am familiar with....Also, this suspension has lots more space for exhaust and other stuff....Anyone done something similar? Thoughts? Bring on the hate

I have decided that the thing to do with my 62 newport is a complete drivetrain swap. Between the 361 big block, the tranny that needs a rebuild, and the crazy high geared rearend, I get about 8 miles per gallon. I want power, fuel economy, and reliability, so I was thinking a late model dodge/chrysler hemi swap. I am thinking about taking everything from a rollover dodge ram, or somthing like that. I am mostly tracking the engine and tranny, my specific question is what its going to take to swap in the complete rear end assembly. I am tracking it might have to be narrowed and all that, what I was concerned with is addapting it to fit the same leaf springs. Can I remove the spring pads on the old housing and transfer them? Does this question better belong in a hot rod forum? Can anyone think of anything else that will be painful about the rearend install? I was planning on doing most of the build myself, but with all the hostile fire and immenant danger pay, I can probably afford almost anything when I get home....

Anyone know of a place that can refurbish old guages/guage clusters? Specifically I have a 62 Newport and some of the guages don't glow as well as they could, and I am pretty sure that they don't read properly. Also was thinking about a replacement although that bubble dash doesn't lend itself to a modern upgrade. Any thoughts?...Money isn't a problem as Uncle Sam decided I needed a year long vacation from my life to wonderful Afghanistan...

Can somebody tell me how much oil to put in my 62' 361 when I change the oil? I don't have a service manual (yet) and am having a hell of a time figuring it out.

Does anybody know how the self canceling turn signals work on a 62 Newport? The switch works but only self cancels rarely. And since it isn't part of the column, I have had a hard time tracing the mechanics of it...

What causes the engine to run on/diesel when you turn off the ignition? This just started happening on my 62 Newport with a 361. The only parts that have been recently changed are the mufflers, to a less restrictive design. The ignition is a mopar electronic conversion, and the carb is a Holley Street Avenger 670.

UPHOLSERY HOW TOO's / Window and door seals

I am having some trouble finding window and door seals for my 62' newport. I really need the seals that keep the window from rattling in the door...mine are completely gone. I am not adverse to custom/do it yourself universal seals, as I am going to be making new door panels as well. Any ideas?

« on: May 15, 2008, 06:02:17 PM » i installed a Mopar Electronic Ignition Distributor in the 62 Newport and now I have some hard starting issues. I have to crank for a few minutes, and then it only starts when the motor is still spinning but the starter has been let off. This only happens when the motor is cold or when the motor is warm and I turn it off for more than a few minutes. I followed the instructions for the electronic ignition and spliced the power wire for the regulator into the power supply side of the ballast resistor. It almost seems as if the distributor isn't getting power while cranking the starter. But it fires right up when warm if I turn it off and then start it right back up. Any ideas?

I am new to Mopars and am having a hard time sourcing torsion bars for my 62 Newport. I am not looking to make a total G machine (I already have one of those) but I would like a more performance oriented than stock torsion bar. Any ideas?
