SOHC or DOHC? Interference engine, break the belt and valves bend.

Well the timing belt broke while I was going 10mph. Replaced the belt and won't start.  Occasionally backfires out of the intake. SOHC interference

Yep, guaranteed you have at least 2 bent valves. They are repairable, the valve guides can be replaced, but the head needs to come off to replace them and the two (minimum) bent valves.

Wouldn't it be easier to replace the head? ?

Might be, depending on the level of damage done. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace a couple valves and guides if it is only 2, unless you can find a head for about $100.

I can get a head for a little under 200 relatively local. The condition of my current head is unknown at this point.

Time to yank it off and see what the damage is. Like I said, determine which is cheaper way to go. That's the one bad thing with the interference engines. Wish they would have originally spent the extra $15 in parts cost to make it a chain drive instead of a belt drive.

Also, remember to replace the head bolts, they are torque to yield bolts.

Don't say that. I'm hoping the damage is minimal due to the slow speed I was going

Naah, if she turns over, a couple dents in the piston top but rarely any damage other than that. All will be fine after the head is changed.
