air filters for 57-62 oval dual-quad aircleaners
« on: October 13, 2008, 05:04:38 AM »

Anyone have any info on where to get air filters for the 57-62 dual-quad oval aircleaners?  I’ve found availability for the large single oval that hangs off the side of the engine, but not much else as oval.  The originals are approx 11.5” x 6.5” x 1.75” (not positive on the height).

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
One of the numbers for the originals is CA161PL http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170260133341

K&N makes a 3 ½” tall version (I presume the oval shape is the same) and Wix does also (42030).  It’s just way too tall.  I want something about 2 ½” tall but at this point I’ll take anything under 3” so that it will fit underhood.

My plan was to find a similar round air filter and mush it into the correct shape.  So far I’m not finding a suitable filter, based on circumference I need a 9.25" dia filter but when I tried to mash one into an oval it came out too long (the thickness interfered with the shaping).  I guess I need something about 8.5" dia.  I’ve done some cross-ref research on K&N’s site and the filters in this size range are oddball filters that parts stores don’t stock.

Anybody got any ideas or knowledge?  I saw in another post that Gary Goers has the air cleaners, but I don't really want to work with someone that only works by mail...

Gary Goers

You can down load his catalog.  He has the filter elements too.

The only way to work with Gary is by mail. . . .   Been there.  But he is responsible.  He is still in the 50's with technology.

How many do you want?  An older friend who has since passed bought all  the NAPA stock before they were discontinued.  Probably 20 left, and his widow wants them gone.  PM me and I can give her phone # to you.

I found a Ford Escort filter that works well, now I'd just like to find one 1/2" taller.  I'd love to help your friend's widow but I've got too much junk laying around the house.  I can't afford to take in any more stuff until I get rid of some stuff.  Storing car parts in the dining room was my last straw...

The least you could do is share the part number with us

I'm not home right now so I can't confirm, but it was for a late-80s Ford Escort.  Looking that up gives a Purolator part# 44379, which sounds right to me, and it's oval too.

At the risk of going off topic........
Mine didn't like the extra radio in the pantry or the side mirror in the bathroom closet.
I tried to tell her it was for shaving but no go.

That was a good thread, not sure I like the look of them but I admire his ingenuity.  During my research I found that Harley had some oval filters but I have yet to get any further info on them.  Need to visit a local Harley store, I guess.  I need filters 1/2" taller than the Purolator I listed earlier, the TB units are a little to tall...
