Tech- - Engine / Really weird water pump problem... ever see this?
« on: October 11, 2014, 11:41:49 AM »
Luckily a local guy I've gotten stuff from has one off a Poly so I know it's right. Now to pull everything  off needed to get to it for replacement....I've got 3 cars torn apart at the moment... grrrr.

Hard to imagine it eating thru all that casting metal, but guess it did!

This is a Poly 318, anyone know if the part is the same as on an LA ,which would be much easier to find?  I know the water pump exits out the opposite side, but maybe this  part is shared?

I recall that someone here (Chris in AZ maybe?)  had corrosion thru the back wall of the timing chest/inner pump housing on an LA 318, losing coolant.  This one's in a different location... sort of makes you wonder about the AL Mope was using back then, or the acidity of water and/or coolant used!

I wasn't sure what it was because it didn't look like any sending unit I'd ever seen, and the one on the transplanted engine was different too... no biggie, we figured it  out with help of the FSM , always the LAST thing one looks at when desperate, it seems.  The gasket will be replaced with new.

Been a year since we started the '64 Dodghe 440 318 Poly engine swap (exact model and year engines) and I'm 99.5 % done, but having been so long I've forgotten a few details:

Which plug wire on the dist (rear mounted on polys) goes to #1 cylinder?  From the wire lengths and firing order it looks like the front-most one (front of car) closest to the carb  on the distributor goes to the #1 cyl , but not sure.

I have a light gray wire coming  out of the main through- the-firewall harness that I labeled "to cylinder at rear of intake manifold"... no idea what I meant by this and don't see such a cylinder on this manifold... I don't if it was a condensor or what???

Do I need 2 throttle return springs, I can seem to find only one, but pics on net for 318 poly show 2, if so, where do I get one?

Thnx in advance  for any answers!

A typical m/c swap for mid-'50s Mopars is to use one from a '67 Dart, imagine similar year Monaco etc would be much the same. I'm using a '67 Dart m/c for my '58 Chrysler Windsor.

You're close Steve... she's the USS "Tiki 'Toon"... Mai tais, Daquiris and  Red Stripe are served on deck at  the dot at 5. Come on up... we're only 5 hrs from Joisey, our next door neighbor is from Verona. We all have a pretty good time ... and at our age, why not?? Heck to the yeah!  All here are welcome!

I've been on boats all my life.  Dad was LT, then Captain after the war, on USS Anzio Escort Carrier  CVE-57 for 5 yrs during WWII. He loved the water, so we always had some kind of a boat growing up... no yachts, just little runabouts, but always something to be out on the water.  It's in the blood. If I hadn't been married I'd have gone NROTC instead of ROTC in '68.  My Dad did NROTC at Tufts Engineering, so he got stuck down in the engine room for the first 3 years. He could tell some stories.
