Tech- - FUEL / nasty gas tank prep w/ 1 scary pic
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:03:19 PM »

I'd say that for me one of the worst jobs is underside floor work: dirt
in the eyes, hair, nose, ears,  everything. Today was really great
outside, so I figured might as well clean up the underside, axle back,
before the new tank goes in.  Here's pics, including a scary one
of the Double Chin Model Mk II Rust-Dust Prophylactic Filter that's mandatory for
avoidance of silicosis.

Lots & lots of red clay dirt &
dust, but amazingly solid metal so far - over the tank even the trunk
underfloor original black paint/primer is still excellent.  It'll
all get coated with
something rust-proofing before the tank gets remounted. For protection
I also wiped the tank with reducer and shot it all over with clear
satin enamel. Hoses will be replaced, and I'll keep the hose box that's
still mounted on the car instead of the one that's on the tank because
it's in better shape. I blew an amazing amout of clay crud out of the
subframe boxes with the air gun and my 20 yr old Sears5 hp compressor.
I think most of it went directly on me. Clean!!

Tech- - FUEL / Gas tank problem - Solved!!
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:24:00 AM »
Get this y'all!! - the derby dude I got the 71 F3 from just GAVE me a
NEW Canadian made gas tank he just took out of another C-body!!
From research it seems there are Chinese made and Canuck made, these
are the best ones you can get.  They have to use fuel cells, so
his derby buddies had no use for it...  apparently it had just
been put into a '73 Imp the month before,  and then the
owner blew the engine! Has a brand new $90 sender in it too,
total worth: over $500!  Whoopee!! Kinda makes up a bit for the
leaky freeze plug set-back we've suffered!!

He also gave me an almost perfect factory battery tray!!

General Mopar Discussions / list yer '65 and up Full Size only!
« on: October 08, 2009, 04:46:00 AM »

OK - we did a comprehensive Mopar list a couple years ago, but that one
included Forward Looks, Plucked Chickens, Darts... everything but the
kitchen sink!  So THIS time, let's go right to the hard core heart
of the club: list all the C-body cars you've owned:  Full Size '65
to '78 ONLY, and include body style & engine please......
Here we go:

65 Newport conv 383

66 NYer 4 dr hdtp 440

69 Imp LeBaron 4 dr hdtp 440

71 Fury III 4 dr green 318

71 Cust Sub 318

72 T & C 440

73 Cust Sub 400 (owned this twice: sold it and bought it back 1 yr later!)

73 Sport Sub 400

76 Gran Fury 400 4 dr

77 Gran Fury 360 4 dr

77 Newport 400 4 dr

71 Fury III 318 4 dr blue

total = 12

I noticed: no Dodges and only one non 4 dr.

also interesting: none cost over $2500 I think.

(these 3 don't really count, but R bodies

were the last truly big Mopars at 220" LOA)

all 4 dr sedans:

79 Newport 318

80 Saint 318

81 NYer 360

Tech- - Engine / strange slow coolant leak
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:58:03 PM »
Noticed the coolant level in the rad was low - no recovery tank in '71
- so filled it up. Took about a  gallon an a half. Every day there
is a small puddle on the garage floor, just an ounce or too, located
way the hell back almost under the tranny... being I don't have a lift
to observe what's really going on, and also given that I'm WAY too FAT
to get that far under it to actually get a bead on the side of the
block and freeze plugs etc, what might be going on here? I need to put
in a new gas tank before I can actually start it and put the system
under pressure and temperature.

UPHOLSERY HOW TOO's / what & where to get cloth & glue
« on: October 07, 2009, 06:45:36 AM »
OK so I'm going to do gray cloth.  What material and foam to use
and where's a good place to get it? Is there a place on the 'net? And
if I do both the roof and inner C panels, how many yards should I
get?  I'm not at all confident I can do a decent job on this, I'm
a big hammer & saw kinda guy!

Tech- - FUEL / junkyard tank
« on: October 05, 2009, 03:11:17 PM »
Any chance of finding a good one? Or should I bite the $400 bullet... 1/2 what I paid for the car!!

UPHOLSERY HOW TOO's / using different headliner material
« on: October 04, 2009, 01:54:10 AM »
Well since it looks like we're keeping the Saint for a big road trip, gotta fix the droopy headliner.

The interior is a very dark navy blue, almost black, and it seems too
dark in there... our 86 volvo has a blue interior and white ceiling and
is much better to be in - so - instead of using the dark blue nylon
panty material, could I pull the ceiling board and cover it with white
pebbel grain vinyl or some such to lighten things up? Maybe do the same
to the C  post sail panels?  If so, what to use for material
and glue, and where to get it?

Bit the bullet and pulled her tank - what a day!, 70s and
sunny,so  if not now, when? good thing too, I found pin holes on
the top - under the rub mat - it must have held moisture, because
otherwise this car is unbelievably solid, here are some  pics of
it, and the mighty 318...

Site Questions and Announcements / site revamp... not?
« on: October 02, 2009, 06:53:01 AM »
Possible site revamp and update was mentioned...  that might be
considered carefully - at least on this site, my cranky 7 year old
'pooter (I'm cheap, except for car schtuff ) up and downloads quick and
clean with no problems, unlike many other sites I visit, including that
other fin we need more gimcracks, bellls & whistles? it
works pretty well now,  and in view of the KISS principle, if it
ain't broken.... or are there issues we're not aware of?

General Mopar Discussions / Mopar and the demise of Saturn
« on: October 02, 2009, 04:13:27 AM »
Well, one more American brand down the drain, this is getting scary -
in just the last few years some of the most venerable names:
Plymouth, Oldsmobile, Pontiac.  Now Saturn bites the dust. How
much longer can Chrysler itself survive... well, at least they're out
from under Daimler's rule..

Tech- - ELECTRICAL / Thread on bulkhead dash connector?
« on: October 01, 2009, 04:13:11 AM »
Where is that thread?  It's something I'll need to address...

Tech- - FUEL / best way to drain bad gasoline
« on: September 28, 2009, 09:51:26 AM »
The '71 F3 has about 10 gallon of bad gas in it - didn't see a drain
plug... back in the '74 fuel shortage you could buy a hand turned fuel
pump for transferring fuel - can you still get them and where? It'd be
handy to have one around... I know not to suck on a hose to start it,
and I don't want to drop the tank right now though I will eventually.

Tech- - Engine / Best quality plug wires?

Anyone got strong feelings on favorites?  Looking for optimum conduction and longevity over radio supression... brands?
