General BS and Laughs / New dog = daughter bit.... :(

Well about 10 days ago we picked up a nice Rotty/black lab mix....maybe more in there who knows?  He was about 2.5 years old and seemed like the perfect dog for our family.  Everything was going well, a few hiccups that you'll get with a seasoned dog in a new family, but nothing to tip us off to was to come.



Well last night we had to have him put down. :(

He turned on my 13 year old daughter and grab her face and shook her by the face.  I was getting ready for bed and all of a sudden head screaming, then more screaming and my wife joined in on the screaming....came dashing out to find my daughter on the floor with blood pouring out of her face.  Thank goodness for my industrial and first aid training in the past...stay calm and asses the situation.

Wife was hysterical...told her in a calm and forceful voice to put the dog away (he was very concerned about what happened...he had no idea), then get me paper towels and call 911.  Daughter was asking if she was going to die...checked her out quickly...some major facial lacerations, one major one right below her eye..."just" missed the eye!  few other punctures and lacerations....she'll be OK!!!

Got pressure on the major wounds to help stop the bleeding, got some clothes on, grabbed the dog and tossed him in the crate and locked it.  Ambulance showed up and we took a ride to the hospital.

They Had to call in a plastic surgeon to stitch her up, but she was one tough cookie, very proud of her.  Don't think she shed a tear all evening, but when I told her the dog would be gone when we got home, she cried.

Wife called the shelter and explained what happened, and they told her to bring the dog down.  They put it to sleep right away.  We did not tell my daughters this though....enough trauma for now.

Here she is after all fixed up at the hospital....



Wife said the Dog just turned on her for no reason, no growling, no warning other then a slight twitch in his jowls just a second before he grabbed my daughters face.  Thankfully she blacked out for the attack...all she remembers is one second she was sitting beside the dog, next she was on her knees looking at the blood pouring from her face!

She's doing well today, in good spirits...should be being doped up on morphine all day. ;)  Should make a good recovery.

Dodge W300...383/400 with an auto tranny, divorced transfer case, and the frame, suspension and drive line looked brand new!  He was asking $20K for it.  it was screaming for a 12V cummins to me though. ;)

Didn't really take many pics....just was not feeling it at the show this year.

I spent the day selling at a local old car swap meet...one of the last of the year for this area.  Also brought my 48 Desoto down to sell as well.

Loaded up and ready to go yesterday evening.  My friend, and neighbor went down too with some GM stuff...(That's his 63 Impala) We were down at the swap meet for 6am this morning.





Set-up and selling. 



This was the first swap meet I've ever sold at and I sold a lot of stuff!  Not many "Mopar only" guys at most swap meets.;)

And I installed all new gauges in the OEM dash...except the speedo. I used Auto meter (Autogage) units, these were your typical 2"-ish gauges. I had to pry them out of their housings, but eventually got them all out.



Then had to figure out how to mount them to the OEM cluster...without damaging the cluster. That was my main concern. Got them in, not pretty form the back, but think they turned out OK from the front.







I have also had the doors, trunk and ignition re-keyed! And I have ordered new steering column turn signal assembly, headlight switch, heater switch and a few other pieces to make the conversion to 12V a little easier.

That should bring things about up to date.

Once the main wiring harness was through the firewall I had to sort it all out. Three bundles....Front end lights, turn signals etc, then engine compartment wires, and finally all the wires that are not needed...elect fan, AC compressor, etc.



Then on to the front end wiring....

Removed the old headlight wiring, and made up all new harness....





Then the same for the front turn signal assemblies....





And all wired up neat....



As well as a new set of horns...well used from a 80's Dodge van I believe....

the green wire is for the reverse lights. I have not installed them yet, and might not since I plan on selling the car. The new owner might decide on a different reverse light set-up, and I did not want to cut up the body.

Well haven't been updating on Fernando regularly...just too many projects, on too many vehicles etc.

So here is an update from the last few months...

I've slowly been working on the re-wire job. Not having much fun to tell you the truth, so hasn't been high on my "to do" list. I get easily side tracked on other projects. But I have finished the front and rear wiring.

I was able to re-use most of my OEM ligth fixtures, just needed some new guts. I dug into my box's of old misc mopar wiring to help in that project.

Then I bought a whack load of new 1,2,3,4,6 and 8 terminal plugs for my wiring connections. I crimped on the new terminal ends, then solder each one, di-electric grease and then shrink tube.

I replaced the coupler I used on my turbo drain last night. I had just used some old hose I had lying around....it fit so on it went. I was informed by a friend that the turbo drain does in fact have pressure, and a lot of heat. So I should be using a hose that is oil resistant, and capable of withstanding pressure, and 150*C (300*F) heat minimum.

With that crummy cheap hose I was using I was running the risk of it failing and then loosing all my oil. Motor would be cooked before all the oil pressure gauge registered the loss.

So I used the coupler off my spare 89 motor....the turbo drain, to crank case hose coupler. Clearly this part is rated for the job, so off t came, cleaned it up and installed it last night. I can now drive without having to watch my mirrors looking for oil spraying out from under the truck.

Well last night I decided to install my "new to me" turbo. It's a H1C with a 14cm exhaust housing. A generous local 1st gen owner gave it to me...Thanks Daniel!

Took about 20 minutes to pull the old turbo...then about 90 min to get the new one in and running.

Once the turbo was in and mounted I ran into my first problem. The 1993 turbo drain would not clear the waste gate actuator. Thankfully I had a 24V unit to use. It cleared the turbo fine, but would not quite make it to the drain tube connection off the block.

Solution for it being just a bit short, and helped with proper alignment as well.





Then I had to remove my exhaust system to get everything lined up and mounted properly. That took a while. Got it running last night and went for a drive. Not as much boost as I thought it might make, but I have not touched the IP except for rotating the stock fuel pin....more fuel might help there. But it definitely spools up quicker on my shifts. Truck doesn't bog and struggle as much either.

Over all I'm pretty happy with it so far.

My left turn signal bulb in the dash popped on, and stayed on, while I was out getting groceries. It does this if a running light is out. Checked the truck and my lower front fender side amber light was out.

Got home and popped in a new bulb...nothing. Hmmm try another bulb...nothing. Go get test light...have power to plug so should come on. Checking out the tangs in the plug and they looked a little compressed. So grab a pick and bend them out, insert 3rd bulb and still nothing.

OK now I'm getting cheesed. So go grab a couple alligator clip jump wires. Test all three bulbs...only one was working. OK put working bulb in again, still nothing. Decided to test connectors while bulb is in socket. Had test light on the ground, and had power on one side. Then switched test light to positive, no ground coming into bulb.

OK so I probe the wire on the outside of the connector....still no ground. Now I figure it must be a bad splice or broken wire. So I start pulling the wrap off the wiring. Noticed that the front turn signal/marker bulb also used the same wires, so figured they must join somewhere and that would be where my problem was. I Got it all off all the way back to the inner fender and the big bundle of wrapped wires there...Still no splice.



I then went and got my FSM and started looking at the wiring diagrams. Appeared that there was no splice in the engine compartment. I went back out and was looking at things and then noticed that the front amber bulb was burnt out as well. I thought what would be the odds that if the front signal bulb was out, that the side bulb would not work either...well after a new front bulb the side one started working....

So there ya go folks I learned something new today, it only took me an hour or so to figure it out. Lesson learned is....if you have front side marker light out, and a new bulb doesn't fix the problem...check to make sure your front marker/signal light bulb is in good shape and working properly.

Did some AC diagnosis today. Wanted to see if the AC would blow cooler with no Power Stroke Intercooler in front of the condenser. So I pulled the front of the truck apart, then stuffed an old fan in front to help blow air across the condenser.







It was 37*C (approx 105*F) and with no IC in the front I was seeing about 57*F from the vents. After reassembly I ran the truck again and the temps jumped up to about 65*F.

So clearly the Intercooler is causing the efficiency of the system to drop.

Only problem I ran into was one of my intercooler boot clamps snapped.



Thankfully I had a spare big one from ??? That worked as a replacement.
