Tech- -BODY / Bodywork Project

I am planning to start some bodywork soon. On previous cars, I have done some decent surface work with fiberglass and bondo. Now that I am an adult(chronologically), I would like to do it right, with steel. I have a welder, and I have found some places where I should be able to get the sheet metal I'll need. I may hit a local boneyard or two, just in case I can pick up something decent, before I go to the trouble of building panels from scratch.
I need to take better pics, so I can try to document the project, but here is what I have to start with, which I found covered in poor fiberglass work. In reality, this is about as bad as it gets. There are a couple of spots, but this is the worst, so far....

Ok, so it's distinctly possible that I may have bitten of more than I can chew, but I feel this '69 Monaco Wagon is worth whatever effort I can put into it.  The interior, much of the body, and the engine itself, all seem to be in great shape.
When I picked this up, I failed in a number of areas, regarding inspecting the vehicle without the emotion of really wanting it for the asking price.
Besides the fiberglass work in the fenders that turned out to be poor, I found that upon closer inspection, the front subframe and suspension parts are rustier than I would have liked. Of course, the car is 41 years old, so who was I kidding?
Anyway, here is a picture under the passenger side front wheel. Is it possible to tell, from looking at this, if I am going to have to hunt down replacement control arms, etc... or if I could pull them, sandblast them, and use what is in there?

I will probably start on the body first, which will be a learning experience in itself, but I want to start looking around, if that's what I'm going to need to do, so I can tackle this stuff when the time comes.

Tech- -BODY / Door Latches - Rear Doors

I'm starting to see my own name in here alot... but I'm learning alot, so thanks in advance...
When I bought this '69 Monaco Wagon, the guy told me the doors weren't lined up right, so he had to lift up on the door handles to get the rear doors open.
My daughter found that the doors open just fine from the inside, so I presumed it was something in the linkage for the door latch mechanism.
Everything looked to be hooked up ok, but the button in the handle was not operating the latch, so I disconnected it, and removed the latch, and it really just seems to need some cleaning and lubrication.
So, the question part is... What sort of grease or lubricant is best, once I have cleaned the latch mechanism?
The fun part will be getting it all back in right, but I'm not worried about it much.

Tech- -BODY / '69 Monaco / Polara Grill Question

Here's a question.... more of curiosity than actual need...
On this '69 Monaco Wagon I recently picked up, I noticed that the grill material is a grid of squares, for want of a better description... The grill on the Polara I used to have was lines, as are most of what I've seen of '69 grills from these cars.
So, what I wonder is... did they offer a special grill? or could this have been specific to the cars build in Canada, or is  it likely a replacement or aftermarket grill?
For whatever reason, I prefer the lines over the grid, and I will probably try to find the panels for it, but if it is just a different grill that was actually offered on the car, I may try to see if someone wants it, once I find a replacement.

I tried searching on this, and did not come up with anything, so I may be doing it wrong...
I am just wondering, since we don't have the availability of repop panels, like our cousins with Chargers and Cudas... where can one get some mild steel sheets to do small repairs on fenders, or frames?  While I'm there... what thickness are the fenders and frames on our C-Body cars from the 1969 era?
I may be in over my head, I wanted to put that out as a question...

Here's the next question regarding the '69 Monaco Wagon:

I have replaced the igniton parts, including Coil, Cap, Rotor, Wires, Plugs, Ignition Control Module, and Ballast Resistor. The reason being, it was getting sort of a miss, and since I just got the thing, I wanted to have all new anyway... so I know when it was done.
The car runs a ton better than it was, because one of the wires had, at some point, spent too much time near the manifold... this is good.
So the question part is... Does the electronic ignition still require the little capacitor that attaches to the coil, and is bolted to the ignition coil bracket? 
I noticed that you can buy an Ignition Coil Capacitor from Rock Auto for a '69, but they didn't have electronic ignition. So I looked at later models, like a '75 Charger, and they don't list that capacitor. Summit Racing doesn't seem to list it at all. This would ordinarily tell me that I don't need it, but I don't want to assume...
The wire is a little brittle on it, and I had to strip it and reconnect it, so if I still need it, I will order one for the '69 from Rock Auto, unless there is a different one I need, and someone can tell me where to get it.

Tech- - Engine / Spark Plugs

I read a thread over on CBody Dry Dock, which discussed spark plug choices for our Big Blocks. This thread was specific to a 440, but seemed to apply well to a 383, too...
The question I have relates primarily to the reach of the threads... I see that the stock replacement is a Champion RJ12YC, which has a 3/8" reach, but there was also a mention of the RN12YC, which looks like it has a 3/4" reach.
So, the questions are... Is there an advantach to the longer reach?
I presume, since the illustrious leader of this forum is the one that mentioned the RN12YC, that there is not a problem with having longer thread reach.
I will be picking up the RN12YC today, but I just wondered what went into the decission making process. Just trying to learn as much as I can.

Ok, I admit it... I am an idiot.
When I picked up my '69 Monaco Wagon, it had a Grant(I think) steering wheel. It was too small, and I could not see the speedometer through it. Since the original wheel came with the car, I went and put it on. It was nice, since I could see the speedometer, and it really just felt right.
Thing is, when I put it on, I neglected to verify that the wheels were pointing strait forward.
No problem... I bought a steering wheel puller.
Now for the idiot part... Instead of putting the hooks under the base of the steering wheel, I hooked them under the metal part of the hub of the wheel, where the horn hooks up. Having done that, when I went to turn the puller, I bent the disk that makes elecrical contact for the horn to work. Go ahead.... "Bob... You're an idiot...."
So, then I put the hooks under the base of the wheel, and got it off, so I could put the Grant back on, until I can find a wheel where I can salvage the horn switch....
Now for the question... is there any help out there for me? I don't mean the idiot part... I used a hammer for that... I mean, does anyone have a steering wheel that I could buy, which has a horn switch that will work with my wheel?

Way back when I had my first '69 Dodge Wagon, I had the fun experience of stripping my timing gear while the car was running (parked, fortunately). That's when I learned that the stock gears had some nylon coating on them, which is what came out in my oil...
So, I purchaced a timing set, with gears and a chain at the local parts store. I got this decent looking set of gears that were solid, with a single row of thck teeth. What I see on most of on the Summit Racing site look like the larger gear has 2 sets of narrow teeth, instead of 1 set of thick, heavy duty teeth.
What I am doing now, is getting together some items, so that I can do some work on the wagon, which I would rather do proactively, instead of how I had to do it the first time. These include, but may not be limited to, timing set, water pump, and all the necessary gaskets and seals, and so on...
The main question is... What is the best timing set to use for normal driving, but with the occasional lack of ability to keep my foot out of it?
 It will remain primarily stock, so I don't know if I need a Double Roller set, or what I should get. I have the repair manual for the car, so I have access to all the torque specs, and I do have help available if needed. Again, I have done this successfully before, but I don't have the formal education to know why to select one product over another, and it was over 25 years ago.... Man, am I getting old.
Also, based on all that I need to pull to get this done, is there any use to replacing lifters, push rods, etc? Other items in the general vicinity, top end wise?

Tech- -BODY / '69 Monaco Windshield

I know these are not available at SafeLite, or anyplace else new.... Is there a better place to find a windshield, aside from going to the boneyard?
This is the only glass, at this time, that needs to be replaced. I have a good sized crack on each side, and I would rather replace it than chance a ticket or a bigger crack...

Tech- - Engine / Heat Riser...

I read something about the heat riser in someone else's post, so I wanted to see if mine is causing me some difficulties...
The counterweight, or whatever it is, for the heat riser, seems to move freely, but it does not seem to move at all with the revving of the engine, or as it gets warmer. It would appear that the thermostat and the heat riser itself are no longer connected.
So the question is, does this present a problem, and what's the best remedy?
The car runs a bit rough, as if there is a miss, or something, so I will be looking at ignition parts first, but there is definitely a tick tick tick sort of sound, which will also have me seeing if I have a leak between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. I just wonder if this heat riser can be a problem too....

General Tech / Monaco Wagon Seats...

This is not an upholstry question, but more of a "Does your car have this?" question...
In looking at where the front bench bolts in, I see that there are 1/2" rubber spacers between the seat frame and the floor. I don't recall there being any spacers in my '69 Polara wagon, when I had it. Can anyone tell me if these spacers belong in there? I plan to take them out, because I think they don't, and it seems like my lap is a tad too close to the steering wheel. I will also be using new bolts, since these are rusty... I just don't want to remove the spacers if they need to be there for some reason.
Now, I know I've gained a bit in the last 25 years, but not in my legs... at least not that much...

Tech- - FUEL / Vented Gas Cap

Ok, so I have been driving modern vehicles for far too long, and I had forgotten what happens when you remove a non-vented gas cap...
So, I was looking on Rock Auto, and they have gas caps for a 1969 Dodge Monaco, and a Polara... and some even say Emission Control, which may or may not mean vented... I don't know. They all, however, say Exc Wagon. Thing is.... That's what I have.
So does anyone know what sort of gas cap I can get that is vented, and will fit my '69 Monaco Wagon?
Alternatively, is there a reason not to get one?

Hello... So I have finally picked up another Dodge wagon, after 25 years... It's a 1969 Monaco, and will need a decent amount of body work, and other things. The interior is great, the body is fair, and the engine needs some TLC, but it runs, and I am a happy man.
I'm gonna try to attach a couple of pics... Now that I have it, and I've found a couple of these great sites, I will probably be a regular poster, since my skills may be as rusty as some of the body panels...
The car came with a 383 G-code, but a previous owner plopped an Edlebrock Performer, and a Carter 4bbl on top, electronic ignition, and dual exhaust... It's not the same as my old HP 383 in the previous Beast, but it has plenty of potential, and the stuff I would have done first has already been done.. :-)

Tech- - Engine / 383 C-Body Oil Pan

So, I recently picked up a '69 Monaco Wagon, and I see that the oil pan is dented. It runs, seemingly well enough, but I would like to look into replacing it. Not immediately, but I am putting it on my project list.
So what I need to find out is, which ones are compatible? I understand that a 383 from a B-Body would have a different pan because of the K-member vs the C-Body sub frame, but I wonder if all of the C-Body MoPar's from '69-73 would share the same pan on a 383...
I presume I'll need to raise the motor in order to get the pan out. Are there any other gotcha's to look out for?
