Apparently a couple of enterprising young people were camping out in one of the exhibits for a week or more before they were caught! lol

Sometimes I think it is a shame that some clasic cars get chopped up for advertising. But the flip side is that sometimes the car that would have otherwise gone to be recycled has been turned into automobile art that is pretty cool.
 
A few friends of mine got contracts to help provide some vehicles for an automotive art display a few years ago at the 1986 Vancouver Expo. They told me that everything they used was just a shell of parts made to look good. None of them would ever be road worthy so they became art.
 
After the Expo was over all of the vehciles in the exhibit were auctioned off one by one to the highest bidder. All of the vehicles had been painted over with a thick coat of grey paint for the exhibit so that all you could see was the distinctive shapes of many cool iconic vehicles that we all have seen on the roads over the years.
 
There were a few different old muscle cars as well as some sedans, staion wagons, trucks, vans, some motorcycles and even a couple of bicycles. Lots of people who won the highest bid expected to find a good vehicle under the paint but most were beyond restoration. There were a few hidden gems I did hear though. Many people that were bidding knew that most of the vehicles were just shells but wanted them for advertising purposes and they were very happy with what they ended up with after the auction. I will see if I can find some pics of the display.

Tech- - Engine / Low oil pressure

I know that some of my engines that have high volume oil pumps would fill the valve covers with oil. The pump moved so much oil I had to add a larger oil pan because it would suck the oil sump dry if you stood on the throttle for more than 5 seconds. Once I added the oil larger pan I also put shorter valve covers back on the engine. I had to pound out the valve covers to gain some room for the aftermarket rockers also. It worked well after those mods.

I hate fake performance parts also! Might as well put some decals on the thing for the good they do.  
 
I thought that one of the factory Challenger shaker scoops did go up with the hood and sealed down to an airbox/airfilter on the carb when you shut the hood. Or was the one you saw more like one off a TransAm?

It looks pretty good the way it is...kind of a retro rat rod look. New paint would definately make the car. Do you plan on painting it yourself? Have you done much automobile painting? If not I would use a solid colour paint...not a metalic flake paint. I would change it to black and make it look similar to an AMX. It is not going to pass as a sleeper anymore so why not make it look like a faster car?

It is pretty cool wondering what car will be next! I would love to own some of the ones that I have seen as my post count goes up...even if they are considered "lesser cars!. hahahaha!

I believe that Steve was onto something when he mentioned a hydro vac brake booster...that might give you lots more room on the firewall for your clutch setup. I have used them in a few of my hotrods that run big cams and thus have low vacuum. It is sure nice to have power brakes when you are running more than triple the hp and more than double the torque of a stocker!


 
I have had hydraulic, cable and mechanical clutches over the years...you use what ever works...sometimes you do not have a choice what system to use because of structural restraints. 
 
It is a very nice car already...maybe you need to find a 4 speed car to play with!

 You can do it! Keep trying! Some people I know brushed their teeth when they had an urge for a smoke. After a few days they had the cleanest teeth and freshest breath...which only reinforced the urge NOT to light up. My best friend's wife finally quit...if she can do it you can! Good luck Steve!

Yee haa! How is it running now that you have a few miles on it? Does it need more fine tuning? Is the clutch holding properly with all that torque on tap? Hope you have lots of fun with it this season!

My cousin always wanted a big block 4 speed Mopar but could not afford to purchase one at the time. He saved up parts and ultimately built his '72 Satellite into the car he dreamed about. He found a wrecked '68 Cornet with a 383 4 speed combination for his donor parts. The car and engine had been beat on pretty bad by the original owner. The reason the car got wecked was when a main bearing rotated on the crank and the engine siezed...this locked up the rear end and the car skidded off the road and sideswiped a tree. The car was stuck in 3rd gear because of some twisted trany linkage and the owner figured that all the drivetrain was toast.  


 
Once we opened up the engine we found the problem and determined what was needed to rebuild it. Those engines are extremely tough and it went back to gether with only normal machining. We replaced a few gears in the trany as the owner bashed the crap out of the first and reverse gears doing "fish hooks" with the car. The clutch was toast also. In the end he also installed new bearings before it went into his car. He also swapped the larger rear end into the Satellite as it had 3.55 gears with a race positrac.
 
The Satellite had a 318 904 combo with 2.73 highway gears...the basic setup for many cars of that era. It took some time to find suitable parts to add the clutch pedal and linkage. Eventually a wrecked 4 speed Challenger donated the parts that were used to make this swap work.
 
The first time I drove the car I got into it at night and grabbed the auto lever that was still on the steering column and it would not move...my cousin laughed at me trying to move it (wired up at the time)...lucky for me it was in neutral when I started it up! Then I noticed the stick in the console. lol What a powerhouse! I had never driven a car with so much hp and torque at that time! The car drove beautiful with the new engine combination. I took it easy until we got off the gravel roads and onto some blacktop. The car would easily start to roast the tires at 50 mph!
 
A few weeks later I saw the car again and he had finished installing the steering column from the Challenger. Once that was done the car looked like a factory offering both inside the car and under the hood.

Why can't you install some new bronze guides? If the only choices are larger valves or knurling I would go with larger valves. New valves will last longer than knurling the guides.

I am sure that you checked this but is it possible that the throwout bearing is in backwards? One of my buddys (actually a few people I know have done it over the years lol) put one in backwards and it went togther but did not work properly. Not sure if yours will go in backwards or not...I have not worked on an AMC except to change spark plugs and small things like that.


I hope that you can figure it out before you break something.

I had lots of bikes over the years also...I even owned some of the fastest 2 stroke bikes ever made. We had some touring bikes also but I always liked the sport bikes best.
