Tech- - ELECTRICAL / Headlamps cutting out
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:14:15 PM »
This has been a problem that is getting worse, after I bypassed the ammeter, and today I threw a set of relays on the low and high beam circuits.

Do a quick road test, and it is like nothing has changed

Looks like I'll be tearing into the dash to change out the switch with its soldered harness, and make the change to a new switch that has blades at the back instead of a harness.

This sucks...I just had to vent...btw howdy y'all, ltnc

Tech- -BODY / Bobbert, ideas for splash shields?
« on: December 06, 2010, 06:10:47 PM »
Since the weather has gotten a little wet recently, and since the original splash shields from Chaz are long gone as they were cooked to the point of being brittle, I think it behooves me and the car to come up with a repair.

Searching in the FleeBay used to come up with some pieces for a '68 Fury, but no more

So, what material would you suggest I get if I have to make up a pair from scratch?  Unless somebody has a set they can pass along?

(or Y-body if ya want to get anal about it) of a General Lee Charger.   You will understand after watching this latest trailer
[TUBE]jBgT-IPKWJ4&feature=player_embedded[/TUBE]

I don't expect this film to be anything Oscar worthy, and I still felt a little raw reading that Chebbie engines were used in place of the original 413s for the cars used in this film, but after seeing this trailer (and especially the was a red-light camera is .... handled after the Black Beauty speeds through an intersection) I can say I will be happy to watch this film and see a badazz Imp doing it's thing....looking badazz

General BS and Laughs / Hot Rod Magazine sucks!!!111!!
« on: March 15, 2010, 02:32:57 PM »

I'm sure that isn't news to many of you here though, but let me share with y'all what lite a fire under me to post this.

Over on Moparts there is a post in the General section by a member about having his artwork in the May '10 edition, on page 58 http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=5867226&page=0&vc=1#Post5867226

Now, in addition to that there is a snippet about the Imps used for the upcoming Green Hornet flic that will be out this December, with pics of a row of Black Beautie'd Imps in a shot, and there is info on them and the film.

Here's the part
"To ensure reliability and performance, most of the
Imperials had their 413 lumps pulled in favor of Chevy big-block crate
engines".

<>

I know it's not on the direction of the writer or Hot Rod Magazine that the engines were yanked, BUT, putting in writing that verbiage infers the engines were not reliable (OK, I COULD see that if the car had sat for 30 years) AND not up to par on performance (ditto if car sat for xx years)??

General BS and Laughs / Comic-Con geekiness plus an Imp!
« on: July 24, 2009, 09:01:08 PM »
I'm sure some of you old timers around here remember The Green Hornet (some even remember the radio series!), and what you might not know is there is a film coming out in 2010.

Now here's the cool bit...just like in the TV series, the movie Black Beauty is a '65 Imperial  Crown, and it was unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con this week!

Note the rare fender mounted pop-up .30 caliber mini-gun (sold as a pair by Ma Mopar...yeah, whatever, I'm kidding...still it looks cool, and I'm sure I could find plenty of room for at least ONE of these for Chaz )

and NOT having a good jack and wheel chucks is a BAD thing.

You ever get that feeling that there's SOMETHING going to happen to your ride, but you don't know what makes you think that until it happens, and THEN you have the "Eureka!" moment?

Like, "Oh! THAT'S what that rattling sound I heard was!" after parking your car only  to have the engine do it's "Running At Daytona" impression before you turn off the ignition but AFTER you took your foot off the pedal.  You follow me?

No?
Ok, I'll paint a picture for you...actually, I'll display 2 pictures for you ('cause Charlie don't surf, and Moesy don't paint)

Mmmmmmmmmmyeah...so I figured out the upper throttle rod separated from the pivoting linkage, thereby causing Chaz to have his 440 do previously mentioned impression after coming to a stop to park when my bro and I went out to lunch today.  He heard the engine race and was about to chastize me for revving the engine until he saw my foot was not on the pedal

We got lunch, and since I couldn't easily see where the rod was supposed to connect to but I could feel the now disconnected rod acting like a dropped anchor holding the carb WOT.

At least he had a cell phone so he could call his supervisor and have her pass along a message to my sup as to WHY we were going to be late getting back from lunch.  20 minutes latem but the walk didn't kill us.

IF I had a jack and two wheel chocks, I probably could have reattached the rod, but I have the roadside assistance, and used that to take it to the shop where you see Chaz being dropped off to.  Besides, he's due for an oil change and the valvecover gaskets are leaking, and I want to make sure the axle is OK with enough lube in the housing before I blaze a trail to BACONFEST at Sears Point Raceway (aka Infineon, after ze Germans threw cash at the place for naming rights) http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads /showthreaded.php?Cat=0&Number=5026655&page=0 ...but I digress.

So, how's everyone else doing?

Tech- -BODY / Discovery for '67-'68 fasttop
« on: May 04, 2009, 02:50:37 PM »

The seals at the front edge of the rear quarter glass on Chaz were toast...as in burnt, due to the 40 plus years of exposure to the sun and other elements.

Driving anywhere with the windows up resulted in a faint whistle from the cooked rubber that was missing some of the flocked outer seal, and I hated having the car washed due to water leaking from there and from the body to door seal (the latter has not been addressed, yet).

I have some good news, however.  With a quarter glass seal for a '67-72 DART and on minor modification, those problems are gone!

I know this will work for a '67 Chrysler fasttop since I did it m'self (at least the side I took pics of.  E-body Ed of The Moparshop did the passenger side to see if it would work the day before I did the driver's side quarter glass seal).

Take a looksee at this!

Yeah, that's bad, and missing the outer flap.  That's what happens when your car is a resident of the California Central Valley (Scotty knows what I mean).

The passenger side was worse!  No pic to show it as installed however

Here's the part number on this piece once I removed it

Yeah, I think THAT'S original to the car.
Here's the passenger side piece.

OK, so as I mentioned, a quarter glass seal for a '67-72 Dart (doesn't matter if it's a 'vert or not, it's probably the seal for the trailing edge of the vent glass) from Soff Seal is what was used to replace the dead seals.

It's pretty much the same length!

To help the installation I used some dry lube in the channel

Before installing it, one modification needed to be made, and that was a cut to the flat edge, which is the top of the seal for this installation.  Cut halfway through thusly

To instal, after lubing the channel it's going into, roll the outer side into the channel first, then seat the inner side with something that won't cut into the rubber.  I used the rounded edge of a brass letter opener.

I seated the base this way, working from top to bottom, and it took less than 5 minutes.

And Wallah!

No more whistling, either!

General BS and Laughs / Stupidity in Silicon Valley

Would YOU let an employee drive your Ferrari on a windy mountain road?
http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_12077720?source=most_emailed

Aside from the stupidity of the owner for letting his 23 year old employee drive it, and stupidity of said 23 year old for driving it too fast on a twisty mountain road between San Jose and Santa Cruz, CA (I've driven it a few times m'self), what would you do if you were the owner of this red car?

I don't miss the stupidity of the Bay Area at all

General BS and Laughs / It's bad enough
« on: March 30, 2009, 01:12:40 PM »

that someone broke the antenna off Chaz this morning.  What makes it even worse is;
-I didn't notice it when I walked out to warm up the car
-I didn't notice it when I had to go back in my apt to get something I forgot
-I STILL didn't notice it while waiting for the car  to warm up
-that I saw the guy who probably did it dumpster diving for cans while I was driving out of the complex
-that I STILL didn't notice it when heading to McD's to grab some breakfast
-that I noticed it almost 15 minutes after I first got in the car, and was almost at work

Too late to do anything now other than try an find another antenna to install

Lea or Steve, you guys have a spare antenna ?

Tech- -BODY / Popping from driver door bottom hinge
« on: January 29, 2009, 01:03:21 PM »
This has me kinda stumped, as occasionally the drivers door will hang-up when trying to close, and it feels like the bottom hinge is in some way involved, but I can't see anything obvious when looking down at it while moving the door open and shut.

Lea, Steve, anyone, any ideas as to a way to either better identify what exactly is the problem, or how to address it short of having the outer fender taken off?

General BS and Laughs / Imagine your Uncle Bobbert died
« on: January 02, 2009, 03:01:05 PM »
and left you his prized "Maus Haus" Shelby GHLS (never mind that he died  when Mobby's "Nadine" rolled over him after being dumped off by Steve, who left in a hurry because he had to be in Florida to pick up Stan, so they could then go to Bakersfield to meet Snotty at the Chinese Buffet  ), then you might appreciate this story http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7807210.stm

Seriously, what a find!
