General Tech- - BRAKES / Warped E-brake drum

57 Plymouth Belvedere...The type of E-brake on output of transmission. Has anyone ever had a warped drum turned? I went all over town today and all the shops turned me down...said it was either too small and they couldn't get their cutting tool in there or the splined hole in the center will cause mounting problems in their lathe and they couldn't get it to run true. Do I have to get a new (used) one?

It's ridiculous trying to get anything fixed on this car...

Tech- - DRIVE TRAIN / 1957 Belvedere driveshaft

I've had a vibration problem in my 57 Belvedere ever since I bought the car in 2010. (during acceleration only @ ~ 30mph). Removed driveshaft this past summer and took it to two machine shops/driveshaft specialists. They both said it was ok and were reluctant to look into it deeper at all...They both just felt the front ball & trunnion joint and rear X-u-joint. They could not spin it to check the balance because they had no way to mount it in their lathe. So I reluctantly put it back in car and of course...still had the vibration during acceleration ~ 30 mph. Fast forward to right now. I removed the driveshaft again and dug a little deeper this time myself. Found one needle roller missing on one of the balls in the ball & trunnion joint up front.  I think this could be the source of the vibration. Now...I can get a rebuild kit but they're $220. Where can I find just one needle roller? It's .062" in dia...and .655" long. Would anyone here have any of these laying around?

General Tech / Windshield wipers quit

My windshield wipers quit on my 68 Monaco today. The wipers were going real slow before they died only went the one speed...(real slow). Does anyone know how to test the wiper motor to see if it's good/bad?...because I do realize it could be a bad switch in the dash. There's 4 wires on the 3 speed motor.... red, blue, green and brown. Which one do I give the juice to? I don't have a shop manual or I'd look it up.

Tech- - ELECTRICAL / Maintaining car batteries

Ok...What do you guys do when storing your cars over the winter...Do you remove the battery and bring it indoors and just charge it for a few minutes a few times over the winter? (I use to do this before I owned 4 cars and 3 it's too much work) 
2nd question: Do you use a manual type charger in which you must be very careful that you don't overcharge it and boil the acid out which will ruin the battery?
3rd question: you leave the battery in the car and put a battery maintainer on it of some sort. If so, What type do you use?
I see many types of trickle chargers, float mode monitoring, proceessor controlled multi-stage chargers out there...What is the best type of charger to use if you just want to leave the battery in the car, plug it in and forget about it?

General Mopar Discussions / 1968 Dodge Polara Production Figuress

Does anyone have the breakdown on production figures for the 1968 Dodge Polara line?  I'm specifically looking for the number of 68 Polara 500 convertibles built but to see the production figures for all the (full size) body styles would be even better. I did a search on-line but only found some ballpark guesses. Many said that a breakdown is unavailable. I have trouble believing that.

UPHOLSERY HOW TOO's / Dying Carpet

I want to dye the brown carpet in my DeSoto to black. Is it worth the effort or should I just spend the $200 for a new black carpet. Details would be appreciated if someone here has done it before with good results.

General Tech / 1958 DeSoto heater core leak?

My DeSoto Firesweep started leaking from the heater hose connection at the firewall last night. Thankfully it leaked down the outside of the firewall onto the ground....not into the interior (floor). The upper nipple must have a crack/rot hole in it. Anyways, I wound up bypassing it with a piece of copper pipe to connect it to the water pump return and had no leaks thereafter. Here's the heater hose route...From water pump to connection at firewall into heater core (under dashboard)....out from inner heater core to big horizontal plenum in engine bay (behind air cleaner) with attached blower. Out from this horizontal plenum back to water pump. My question is: Are there 2 heater cores?...and why would that be? Has anyone removed the heater core under the dash? Is it difficult?

Tech- - Engine / Spin-on oil filter retrofit?

57 Plymouth 301 v8...changed oil and it took me a 1/2 hour to get the new filter/canister back up in there properly...The biggest problem was making sure the top (large) gasket was in it's seat properly...What a pain in the backside? For the next oil change I want to have a spin-on oil filter retrofit handy...Has anyone ever done this on a poly motor?...Where did you get it? And what type of spin-on filter does it require?

Steve had mentioned a while back when I was flushing the cooling system in my 69 Fury that one could add Dawn dish detergent or Muriatic Acid to the system? I've used Dawn before but it takes many subsequent flushes to get all the "bubbles" out...If I use Muriatic acid I realize I need to be much can I add without ruining the radiator or something else? Also...I've used the Prestone flush before but I was never impressed with the results...

I bought the car this way...This is what it's doing...It starts right up fine but runs it's missing a cylinder. Originally, I just thought it was a bad wire or plug on the passenger side because it sounded like it was missing from the passenger side exhaust pipe. Right away, I noticed the plug on the passenger side closest to the firewall was fouled pretty I replaced all the plugs and dist. cap but car still ran change.  Then I checked all the wires by checking spark at the cap as I pulled the wires one by one. Some wires seemed to have stronger spark than others and the stronger sparks seemed to make a bigger difference as to how the engine ran when I pull them one by one. When I listen to the dual exhausts as the car is running the "miss" is on the passenger side when the engine is cold and moves to the driver side when it's hot. The "miss" sounds like an "extra puff" in the exhaust and the side that exhibits the "extra puff" also is much stronger in flow. Summing it all up...I replaced the plugs, dist cap, checked the wires (they look new)...sanded the points/re-gapped them...checked timing, Looks very steady...did not set it to spec yet. Just watched it for a few seconds and noticed it was very's not bouncing around at all. History: The car sat for a long humid South Carolina...The guy hardly ran it at all from what he told me...especially the past several years. He bought it in 1985 from second owner in NC and restored it himself in 1995.  Odometer works and it shows 1960 miles....probably 101,960 or 201,960? Anybody got any ideas as to what I can do to it next?.just

General Tech / Heater Core

Looking to get my 41 Plymouth's heater core fixed/replaced. Took it in to the radiator shop this morning but the guy said oh boy...that's going to be expensive...I'm beginning to think I either buy ALL the stuff in the world that is hard to find or has the most expensive/sought after replacement parts or...just everything is getting out of sight. Anyways, Anybody have any experience as to where to go to get a replacement or recore that is reasonable? Thanks, Bob

General Tech / super cooling system flush?

Has anyone found anything that really cleans out (as you drive) the cooling system? My 69 Fury still runs a bit hot and pukes fluid out the overflow pipe on real hot days. I ran with prestone super cooling flush last summer for several weeks and then followed it up with a couple squirts of Dawn/water a couple of times but it's really no better. I removed the thermostat again to run for the remainder of the summer so now would be a good time to try something really caustic in there if I can...I hear CLR may work? Not sure how much I'd have to put in there though. That stuff isn't sold by the gallon if ya know what I mean...

General Tech- - BRAKES / 41 plymouth brakes

Working on the front brakes on this 41 plymouth I just got a few months ago. They were pulling to the left badly...I do have the shop manual...says I need special tools to make linings concentric with drums...arghhh. There's upper and lower adjustment cams for each drum! Anyone have any experience with these antiques?..These are the pre-bendix brakes...locheeds? Anyway...after pushing down brake pedal now...front drums lock up no matter where I have em adjusted...Also...added Dot 3 fluid to reservoir...wondering if that was a no no manual says add ISO-brake fluid only...Hmmm...too bad I didn't read manual first!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Another new ride arrived for me today...this Desoto pretty much fulfills my "Christine" least for now. Big fins...push button tranny...L-350's very nice. Thank the good Lord for the miracle of getting me that refund back from MLC! This car gives me something fine to show for it.

Not a project car, but at any rate it's my new ride...just arrived late last week. A 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Auxiliary Coupe from the west coast.
