Title: CHECK UR GAS STATIONS GUYS
Post by: shawn payne on April 06, 2008, 04:21:37 PM
I dont know if this more common up north or not but here in florida ive noticed that some of the cheaper gas stations are mixing gasoline with ethanol, up to 10 percent. Now from what i know of ethanol its very similar to alcohol. It takes two gallons of ethanol/alcohol to do the same work as one gallon of gas. I noticed a drop in the fuel economy in my truck and wasnt sure why, then one day i noticed a small sticker on the gas pump that the fuel i was buying could be mixed up to 10% of ethonal. Im pretty sure i know what happend to my milage now. Im not a big fan of ethanol (if you read up on it, its not as great for the environment as al gore says it is) last time i checked ethonal/alcohal is very corosive to rubber products, so if you have a non e-85 car what kinda damage will it do? maybe im wrong but if im gonna spend 3.29 per gallon of gas then i want it to be ALL gas.

Ethanol is in everyones gas.  It's not just the "cheap" stations.  I believe they all are 10% now

You are correct.
People are confusing the current gas which MAY have up to 10% alcohol by law with
the E85 fuel that is 15% or greater ethanol.

I have noticed on some gas pumps an itsy-bitty teeny-tiny label in 2 point font stating that you may be pumping gas with up to 10% ethanol.  I also read the back of cereal boxes.

They took the MTBE out of the gas because it has polluted so many wells and aquifers when it leaks out of gas stations tanks. The ethanol was to replace it in winter gas mixes. Don't know when it's not needed anymore......

Yea, I 've noticed a slight drop in my gas mileage too, its crap. If
I'm going to pay 3.37 for 93 Octane it better be all 93 damnit, I agree with you 100% Shawn.

They've done it to us here in Oregon also.

The Ironic thing is the government dictates a car comapny has to get so much MPG average throught it's entire line.

JB, I think the biggest thing that will hurt your car is the lack of lead in the gas.If your that worried about it you should get some of that lead additive stuff(avalible at most auto and large retail stores)

Ethanol is ethyl alcohol, the same stuff as in your bottle of jack
Daniels...as opposed to methanol (wood alcohol), propanol, butanol,
pentanol - all are alcohols, in other words OH groups attached to
chains of varying number of carbons. As Bob said, it was used to
replace that nasty MTBE - Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether... a bad and
persistant pollutant, used to reduce air pollution in cold
weather.  Besides the fact that diverting corn production to
making ethanol, a scam by politicians to get votes in the ag states, is
driving up our food prices, when they could be using switchgrass and
other non-foods, even algae,  to produce cellulosic ethanol, it is
also potentially harmful to our old fuel systems. It does pollute less
however. In large %s, it is highly corrosive and damaging to certain
metals and older formulations of rubber. It's energy density is about
~20% less than gasoline, not 1/2 as previously stated,  that means
your range is reduced 20 % if you are running E100 (100% alcohol). E85
is widely available in Europe, and a few places here, GM is touting it,
but what we get here is more like E15, I believe, 15% alcohol. It would
only reduce range minimally. What is bad is it is not always labeled,
as also mentioned. I'd try to avoid putting an alcohol blend of any
kind in any old car, if at all possible. We may be forced to retro-fit
our cars with alcohol proof fuels systems if they increase the usage of
it. Or convert to Propane, whichis what I'd like to do.

Interesting coincidence:
Just this week, a co. has proposed to build a first in the country "sweet" sorghum ethanol plant here.  Advantages: Not a food supply source, no foul smells, minimum water consumption, etc...  Basically the ideal source for ethanol production.
The part I'm happy about, there is no "NIMBY" mentality down here.  People are tripping over themselves working w/the co. to get construction going.

1/2 or 20 percent.... whatever its just bs that we are getting forced fed this garbage and still have to pay full price. we dont have winters down here so we dont have to worry about the "extra" winter polution

I'm not sure what we get here but I know where it comes from, United Refining Co.  My father retired from there.  The general philosophy there is WATER AND DIRT WILL BURN!  Thier winter formulation used to have increased levels of methanol to keep the octane as advertised.

They are now using ethanol however.

The latest lab tests haven't been disclosed but I've heard rumors of some outdoor testing involving an old rag dipped in thier gasoline being stuck to the end of a piece of reinforcement bar...  it took a propane torch to get it to ignite, and this was while the lab techs stood around smoking Marlboros while they watched!

I werked there for a few years too...  this story isn't totally untrue.

The worst thing is that apparently they aren't always notifying the
customer that alcohol is in the fuel being dispensed - I've never seen
a label on a pump here in NY, and I've been told that it's used here -
any label should be BIG and visible if so...whatever happened to "truth
in labeling"??  Most of the consumer rights groups have been
neutralized by corporations it seems.

Look at it this way....with more alkyhaul in the gas you will be able to have the attendant put it on yer  tab.......

But those olives clog my fuel filter.......
