well hey guys. me and the missus FINALLY got rid of that wagon.
and we went and bought a 94 Pontiac Grand Prix.
it isn't quite what we were looking for(MOPAR) but the size is right as was the price.

200k on a 3.1 tells me that the hereditary 3.1 issues have been addressed already.  Should be a good score James!  Those engines run well and last a looong time with proper maintenance.  It's probably already seen a new rack too, so one less FWD GM woe.   
 
If it hasn't been performed recently, do a tranny service and add a bottle of Lucas trans-fix.

    Hold on there Matt , A trans service may give you
more trouble then what you had before. James Check the trans dip stick
, if the fluid isent dirty then Leave it alone FWD GM
transmissions especially the transaxels have a tendancy of hating new
fluid and can slip and shift hard. What you can do it take the car for
a ride around town then jump on the highway boogie up to speed and if
it dosent feel as it should, then use the Lucas about a half a bottle
at first, drive for a bit and add the rest if needed.



     I've been driving FWD GM cars since I have
been driving and know how they react to things like that pretty well,
sometimes better then the GM service monkeys! Give that a shot and
report back to us!

    Also it is a 3.1, 3.4, or 3.8 engine.

I've owned several FWD GM's myself.  I never had any problems with them but they were all serviced as needed with a fresh filter and new Merc-III and some Lucas.
 
I know...  "If it aint' broke DON'T fix it."  However, if the fluid smells burnt or looks like weak coffee, it needs attention.  I've sold a couple Motorvac tranny flush machines and they work, flushing the torque converter too!  My TH-250 Brougham was a guinea-pig for one sale and it drove and shifted 100% better!
 
My '88 Olds 88 acted the same way at 185k, and I just changed the filter and fluid...  Ten times better.  AOD's need love too!

What's the Lucas fluid you refer to? My daughter has a '90 Olds 98 with
3.8 V6 automatic that has slipped since I bought it off an old lady,
with only 62K original miles... this car looked new and was maintained
by the book, fanatically even, but has always had the slip problem...
now has about 80k mile on it...is Lucas needed?  Where to get?

well it's teal with a blue hood.(wish it was green) the tranny shifts GREAT. and other than a window not going down there is a slight engine problem.

     Rodger, you can get it at Napa or Pepboys or
autozone any one of them should have it. Its a super thick transmission
fluid additive that thickens up the fluid inproves seals and shifting.

now the ONE SINGLE problem we have IS......
a miss.
it's in the rear bank of cylinders. was told number 5.
we were also told from the people we bought it from that the head gasket was bad.
but it burns NO coolant, and NO oil. it just misses and runs and drives like it misses.now i was thinking it could be something electrical.
let me know what ya think guys

If your not burning coolant or losing coolant it's likely not a headgasket,pull the plug and see what it looks like.

Swap around your coil packs and see if your miss changes location.

I knew they didn't have plug wires but I couldn't for the life of me think of what they were called...........coil packs!!!

For a 3.1 a new coil pack costs about the same as a new cap and rotor for a conventional dizzy.  There are three on that engine however.  Throw in a set of wires and yer looking at $120 for the werks.  You don't wanna' know what the ignition module costs...  (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)

too much. looked at the coolant today and it looked linda like sewage water. brown with crud everywhere. i wanna get a flush done but i don't want it to open up any leaks

as a reminder on those GM V6's they all all will
develope a coolant leak at the intake gasket. Not a very easy
job,but, something to look out for

Yea, I agree with the guys try to move the coil packs around plull the
plugs, and you should prob replace them and replace the wire. Def do
coolant flush, I have a set of new AC delco rapid fires my engine didnt
like. they have only been ran for aqll of 20 seconds after i noticed a
crappy idle. Let me know If I can help you out.
