Title: air cleaner height
Post by: Mark on April 01, 2008, 12:37:14 PM
Unrelated to my Fury, I am building a 69 Wanna Bee.  I have the entire ramcharger set up from a 383 car. I am installing a 440. I know the 440 is taller and the 383 air cleaner base will not allow the hood close. So the question is.... Since I have a fabricator on reserve down in NC where he is hanging my 1/4s and rebuilding the rear window channel..... How tall/short should the air horn be to allow the system to mate up properly with the 440 as opposed to a 383 ??  Not wanting to pay for the 440 base IF i can find one, we are going to shorten the air horn on the base from the 383 set up. You can always fabricate the base (lower portion) into a "step-down" design where you can use the 383 top section of the air cleaner to mate to the Ramcharger set up.Sheet metal or aluminium will do.
The base that sits atop the carbs do not have to be pretty since it will only be seen when you have to maintain the thirsty  six barrells,LOL
The only real trick is to have it down low enough to clear the hood and not bind any linkage.
My guess would be 1-1/2"  to 2 inches.

Yes

You could also use a K & N cold air filter like I did on Polaraco.  If need be, you can heat the plastic horn and squash it.  Not factory looking, but cool looking.  Just a thought

It all depends on how high the  new intake is    high rise or stock    I never had a  problem with the stock 440 intake or  the aftermarket edelbrock  with the Ramcharger

Thanks guys!  The pictures pretty much sum it up....Thanks Butch!
Just for the record, I am sticking with the factory maniforl on the 71 440 going in the car.
Now for the color... black interior because it is already there and only needs a ront seat cover....  lime green, curious yellow or plum crazy????  so many choices and not enough room, time or money to build one of each....(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley16.gif)

Somehow, None of those colors strike me as good looking on that car.  Although the colors were very successful on the smaller cars.  I guess the question is, do you want to drive a Fat Plum, or a Large Lime?  Or do you want to drive a car brighter than the owner in Yellow? (Ohhhh I couldn't resist that. . .(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) )

See if the factory colors make sense.  Orange looks good. . .Just leave off the Orange Peel on the paint job. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

How about Petty Blue?? - the electric blue non-metallic - was that for
70 -71? Not stock for '69 I guess, but a great color with satin black
hood & scoops, stripes etc - I "almost" want a B body just to paint
it that color... tho' it might look prety cool on a Sport Fury!!!

My favorite 2 colors on that kind of car have always been B7 Jamacia Blue Poly and T7 Saddle Bronze Poly. My 69 RR is the rare T3 Honey Bronze Poly, which is probably going back on the car with it's new black interior (formerly spring special decor package tan).

Well,  I'm probably gonna Piss ya off but....

Just say NO to HIP colors!    I'm so sick of everybody having to have a High-Impact color on their Mopar I can't stand it.

My preferences for a 69 Bee ( since I had one )  ....

Butterscotch
F6 Bright Metallic Green ( mine was )
Sunfire Yellow
Bronze Metallic
Seafoam Turquoise ( really a pretty color & stands out )

Plum Crazy never worked for me or Sublime ( YUK ) & I've been around since these were new.
I feel the same about Reds & Blues nowadays,  just plain overdone.

What color was the car originally?

Butch

Hey Rag, it's your car, paint it whatever color you want and like.

I understand Butch's comment.  I'm that way when it comes to "General Lee" '69 Chargers - gag me!!!  (Not to menton people's obsession with dog-dish hubcaps!)  But, it's your car; paint it the way you want it.

Nobody's arguing that point Scott.  He asked our opinion of the three colors he mentioned and I answered him with mine.  That's just our opinion.  It's kinda like the rims and white walls on the Polaraco, or the color I was painting the VOAB (Which everyone liked BTW)  It's my car, I just wanted to know what everyone else thought of it.

Would you have ridden in the Polaraco if it were Sky Blue Pink Poly?  It's a good idea to find out if you are making an eyesore, or a real appealing car.

Now we'll ask again.  What do you think of the colors Mark mentioned?

I hate to say it but the 440 RC base is the way to go.  I know, HTF but BUTCH has one (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

As far as color...  the best looking '69 SB I ever saw ran a 10.5 quarter and was red with black steelies and DOG DISH hubcaps!  It was a very warm single-carbed 440/727 car and sported a fiberglass 6-PAK hood.  The '69 SB's are my favorite B!

I cannot remember the paint code, don't ask...

I'm Curious now what Curious yellow looks like ? My Bee's original color was sunfire yellow Y2  ? Next time around it will go back to sunfire   It all depends on what YOU like

I know Ron...  but I've always been a fan of red or BLACK on a car!  My favorite Ca dill-pickle ac is BLACK!

I like sunfire yellow too!  Looks good on a B or a fusey or a close match on yer NYB....

Hey Butch.. no piss-offs here... all opines are welcome.. I had 2 big limes. a 71 cuda ragtop and a 69 road runner. Both had black insides and the color looked dang good on the bird...in my opinion (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)  Oh yeah, it was originally white with a black vinyl top. If it were a real Bee and not a wanna-bee, it would go back original.

I had thought about orange, but too many in the non-mopar crowd would mistake it for a Gen Lee look-a-like and that would piss me off. As a matter of fact, the kid i bought it from 12 yrs ago was going to make it a Hazard look-a-like.

My 11 yr old likes yellow and black, but tells me no way cuz that is the Steelers colors and that would just be wrong here near B'more. And with the baby being c-sectioned this coming Wednesday, purple is sure to be known as the "Barney car" when he starts talking (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)     If it were another 69 runner, Petty blue would be the ticket for a tribute to the king.

I do like the bronze look, too.... hmmmmm  I'll let you all know what I decide when it finally makes it to the paint shop in about 2 yrs. I've been taking pics of just about any 69 Bee/RT I see at the shows.....  What about that purple/pink lookin color Ford put on their Flare-side p-ups in the early to mid 90's.................That ought to ad some more color to this thread...

Dana's drag Fury (11 sec C on the dock) is Curious Yellow. It's got a hint of green to it.

That bronze color is great - in fall of 1968 the kid that roomed next
to me in college (he was from kinda near you - Hyattsville in PG
County) had a brand new '68 Charger - 383 4bbl - that he'd bought new
the summer before his freshman year by working for years at his Dad's
gas station in Chillum....he had foresight - 40 yrs later, he still has
it!! I still remember riding in that car when it was 6 mos old - I was
envious to say the least!! that Bronze is a gorgeous color, and he had
the black vinyl top, it actually looked real good with it. The lucky
(smart!) dog also picked up a '70 Challenger 440 6 pack  'vert
about 15 yrs ago - when they were still sorta affordable - and he still
has that one too!

What years was Petty Blue available?  You don't see that color all that often, even at shows...

I'm just one of those that believe certain Body-styles just don't look good in certain colors.

But then that's why everybody's different I guess!

I loved the F6 on my M-code Bee & it is a HIP color.    I like top Banana too on those as far as HIP.    Plumb Crazy works on an E-body but again everybody thinks they gotta have one.

The B3  ( Petty blue or more correctly Basin Street blue in later years ) is a Pretty color too.   Had a 72 Demon here in that color & have a buddy with it on a 74 BB Charger.

We're doing a buddy's Valiant right now here,  65 Signet 273 Commando car & it was a Dark red but we're tired of the reds too.....going to be Mauve ( Lavender? LOL! ) now & it's really a pretty color.    I talked him into that one too,   course the car is Mini-tubbed & will have dark grey TT's on it with about a 28X12.50 tire under the back too.   It'll work.

just gotta be different.

Personally, I think the black interior is suited best to the yellow. The green and purple ;ook better with a white interior IMO.
