Title: I need your opinion on Polaraco
Post by: Steve on March 20, 2008, 04:35:35 PM
I have this set of wheels.  They are 7" wide off one of my 5th Aves.   I thought maybe I could now put these on Polaraco and add a set of WHITE WALLS !

I can put the road wheels on VOAB since it won't be a daily driver.

MMMMM

Changes the look of the whole car with the white walls!

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a profile, side view pic of a plain ol' white wall tire?  I had to make that out of about 4 layers!  Sheeesh

Guess I better got those rims swapped off the the parts car and get those to a tire shop huh? (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)

I was doing the 2nd set of pics while you guys were agreeing with me.  Thanks! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)

I've always said it would look better with white walls, but those wheels don't work for me on that car.  Same goes for road wheels on the '67.
I'm certainly no purist, but I do think wheels of the correct vintage look better.
Title: I need your opinion on Polaraco
Post by: Steve on March 20, 2008, 07:55:53 PM
Yeah I know what you mean Dan.

Those current road wheels came off a 75 Cordoba, but are correct for a 72 also.  The difference between them is the dome on the center cap is slightly different.

The white walls YES.  Definitely.  VOAB is going to be a topic I'll have to work on later.  I might just stay steel with wheel covers.  But the original covers are 14" so I'll have to find somethig vintage correct.  I'm putting disc brakes in the front.

i'm for the white walls too

i think you could do a better rim choice.

but if you like those then go with em.

One werd...

YUCK!

If it was up to me I'd leave Polaraco alone and spring for a set of Magnum 500's fer the VOAB!  Those M-body wheels do nothing for Polaraco and I didn't like them when they came out back in the day.

Just being honest Steve, no offense (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)

Then again, the pattern of the 5TH Ave wheels remind me of the "milkcrate" days!!! LOL (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif) (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif)
Maybe that's why you really like them!! HHHmmm??

As for the VoaB,poach the 15" plain steel wheels from the other 5TH..I have the correct 15" wheel covers for 67-69 C's.
You can have them if you want them.
That will increase your tire size options.
14" tire sizes are getting tougher to get. 2157514 are hard to find-except if you own a trailer.Repro 8.25-14's are not cheap, either.
I have decided to go with the 14" wheel covers I bought of RBrogle.

1. factory 1972 full wheel covers and white walls.
2.White painted wheels,dog dish caps,blackwall tires.
My two cents recommendation.
After looking at the photoshop pic of the milkcrate wheel on the Polaraco,I dont think so..
Sorry.

I don't like the white wheel idea.  I agree the white walls would make a difference. . .

I'm going to do some wheel shopping and see what I can muster up.  I was more interested in the performane of a lighter wheel then total appearence satisfaction.  Those wheels don't seem to be set as deep as the road wheels I have.  Would widen the track an inch or two.  When looking at the fronts, it looks like it needs it.  I just want something on there that is not bent, will improve the ride and handling and be pleasing to look at.

This is why I asked you guyz.  The way it is with whites might help.

I'm trying to be cheap about this.  Maybe I can throw them on for now until I have some money to burn.  VOAB season is about to start.  But I did spend the winter buying parts.  I can go for a set of tires, but Rims and Tires are another thing.

Steve, which ever 5TH you are going to junk, rob the steel wheel off of it.They are 15X7.Or grab another set at the junkers.
Or I can send you a set with me with the 15" wheel covers.
You can always get tires later on.The 2057515 tires will work on the VoaB for now.

The steel wheels I have are going right onto the white 5th.  They have good tires and the wire wheel covers. I have the original set of steel wheels that came off Polaraco, but not sure what I want to do for wheels yet.  I have to look and see what's out there.  Whatever it is, they have to be low maintenance.

Try it! If you hate it then put them on the VoaB!! If you hate that then put em on e-gay!

I don't see anything wrong with the wheel's you have on there now. If you are looking for a change or just trying to spice thing's up why don't you paint the center section of the wheel body color and add the white wall's, I think this would look killer. Would not take those wheel's off the car, they suit it. Photoshop the green into the wheel's and add the white's and see where i'm coming from...

Green where the black is...

There's only 2 things that bother me about these wheels Jimmy

1.  One of the wheels is bent.  I've already replaced one.  It's the last shake left I have in the car.
2.  The offset is much deeper than the original steel wheels.  It not only looks funny, but it narrows down the track.  It's amazing what 2" of wider track can do for you in handling.

Ohter than that, I like the wheels and should just go get a set of white walls and get it over with.  I can paint the green later.

I scored them off a friend who had them lying around.I traded three cop wheels for these four  ten-slot wheels.
Foamy,they are usually found on '81-83 Cordoba's and Mirada's.
But today you might be lucky to score them in a wrecking yard.
I know that Nigel at National Moparts has a few sets..

Those wheels on the New Porker look good on that car.  However, I don' think they would look good on Polaraco.  I'm not wild about the hub cap deal either.

I guess I'll try ot find another road wheel and keep what I have.  I can put whites on it when I find the new rim.

They have all the rare vintage names in wheels. Rader,Appliance,ET,Superior, etc.

Thanks WeeBee  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)

I wrote them.  They are impossible to find in nice shape anymore.  They appear to have 15 X 6 and 15 X 7.  I have to pull my spare out of Polaraco and measure the offset and rim width.

Since your the tire EXspurt. . . . 235 75R 15 .    7" is OK?

If the price is right on those, I'll buy 4 of which ever has the shallowest offset.  I think the 7" was 3.5" and the 6" was 4".  You hvae that info in your wheel library?

Update  My current Road Wheels are 15 X 6  Looks like 4 1/2" offset (?  Is that right?).  The Aluminum rims are 4" .  The Steel wheels look like 3.5.  That explains why the wheels look so sunk in the wheel well.

Speaking of Tires

I want a 235 75R 15  White Wall.

I would like to have decent wear and a good ride.  Although, 235's on this car should last a very long time.

Should I stay with the 235 or back up to 225?

Lightweight wheels reduce unsprung weight-giving better ride, fuel economy, and handling.
I did notice the difference almost right away when I switched from steelies to the ten spokers I have on now.
23575R15 on 7" rims are perfect-Fill out real nice.Fuseys and Formals can pull that size off real easy .
Remember that the '93 Ram you raped  was outfitted with that size and should bring back the proper speedo reading and match up with the rear gear ratio.
HWY MPG should increase by 2%.
As for the tire brand,I tend to be biased (pun intended! LOL)
To be honest with you-in my experience, any cheap whitewall tire in the 2357515 will ride nice on a heavy C.
High mileage tires tend to harden up after a while and give a harsh ride.
I had Goodyear Regatta 2's on my '78 NYB 2-door  and they were worse than the el cheapo Predators that were on the car before that.I jammed a set of cheap Kelly tires on there and the car rode better than ever.
Also most passenger tires nowadays have a fancy sidewall design that does not look right on an older cars.
Wobble Mart,Pep Boys tires will have a plain sidewall with the 1" whitewall.
Plus going from 225 to 235 will actually give you a smoother ride-regardless of tire make and quality.
Uniroyal Tiger Paws worked great on the '77 Newport I had as well. That thing was an unstoppable tank..
You had many more cars in the past than I have ,so you can be your own judge in taste in tire brands.

That was fast.

So you suggest a Walmart Tire, or R & S Strause.  Interesting.  The ones I have on there now are nice, I forget the maker, but it's a familiar name.  Not a Good Yich popularity name.  I want to sat Pirerrlli.  Without going out to look, I don't remember.

You're talking about the side walls.  What are the differences?  Is the difference a concern?

I know the Virgin rides so much better than the Polaraco.  The Virgin has elcheapo's on it

Just for looks more than anything else. All of the popular large makes have a modern serrated pattern molded on the sidewall.
They do look fancy but do not look correct for an older car.
Just looks too busy with a whitewall,IMHO
Look for a whitewall tire that has no fancy sidewall pattern on it.

I've been trying to come up with something but I think the road wheels look best.  Finding another set might prove interesting.  The last set I saw at a swap meet sold to a friend of mine for $250 with rings and caps.

I thought my Polara looked nice with body-colored wheels, two-step dog dishes and raised white letters, but I don't think that combo would work on a fusey.

Mine looked kinda like this, but had a LH A-pillar Unity spotlight and was a hard top.

There's a link to an eGay car that looks just like mine with RWL and cop caps.  The look isn't what I was trying to accomplish.  I want something I can pull up to the Ritz Hotel with and make the Beamers look like slum cars.  (Well they are already, but tell that to the owners(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif))
  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260221592977&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260221592977&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016)

You're over looking the fact I want to widen the track an inch or two  also.  These are apparently 4 1/6 offset and the 5th Aluminum are 4 1/2.  So the track would be 1/2 + narrower.

They only have an 8 1/2 and a 10" wide Western.  So It's going to have to be the 2nd choice, the American Racing Vector.

The American Racing Rim (2nd picture above)  will cost me $155.00 each.  There is no shipping as I am buying them local with new tires.

My local guy will sell me 235 75R 15 White Walls for $70.00 each, valves, mounted, balanced, + Tax.  They are an off brand, but built by Goodrich.  $900 for the package.

The Westerns, the ones I like are $790 a set + Lug Nuts.  Ouch!  Figures.  I got expensive tastes.

The beat goes on

Steve I really like the top wheel. I think they would look great on
Polaraco. The second set look like they would go on a Grand National,
too GM looking for Polaraco. And I like the ones on Leaburns car, but
honestly the top rim get my vote.

As Far as tires go, I bought my Coopers two years ago and they are
great tires. I have the 1/2 inch white wall, but they do make them in 1
inch as well. the wear is great, ride is great and they arent all that
expensive.

Sorry Steve...  I still think the Chrysler road wheels look the best.  I've always been an advocate of first impressions.  The first pics of Polaraco I ever saw had those wheels.  They just look nice on four-door cars, especially with a mild white-wall...

My only other suggestion is stock steelies and a set of THESE from my basement

Yeah OK Weebee.  Find a Marada wheel that is affordable or not all beat up.

The Rim on the 5th Ave is darned near the rim you are showing with the X's (DBR 1200).

Yeah I know Matt but I repeat I have two problems and tired of chasing one of them.
1.  I have 2 out of 5 rims bent.  One is on the car and driving me nuts

2.  The Track is wrong.  The Road Wheels are 4 1/4" back space.  I need 3 1/2 to 4"  The 5th wheels I have satisfy both my needs and I don't have to spend a ton of money.

I want to thank you guys for helping me make up my mind.  And I really Really like those Western Wheels.  But. . . I am not willing to spend a great deal of money right now.  So I came up with a compromise.  I'll buy a set of White Wall tires and put them on the Aluminum wheels I have.  Lets see how that looks and works.  I can still get the other rims later if they look stupid and swap the tires over.  I've been becoming awful cheap lately. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

If nothing else, we had a hello a discussion about tires and wheels.  Hope someone got some ideas from it.

Sigh
Ixnay on the 5th Ave Heelways.

Back to the drawing board.

I grabbed a guy from the office today (He's a gear head- - Jeeps- -Ugh) and ran over to swap out the rims.  I put the wire wheels on the white 5th I am keeping and threw the Aluminum ones, I showed you, in the trunk of Polaraco.

Long Story Short. .  .  After looking at them, they are pretty beat up.  I wondered if I should try to clean them up, but reality is I don't have the time or place to do it right.

I like the road wheels but they aren't the right fit for the car.  The back spacing is too much.  The track is to narrow and they look wrong in the wheel wells.  But they do look nice when you step away.

So here is the plan

I'm back to the Westerns or the American Racing Vectors.

I am watching these on EGay right now.  I'll just off the tires. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150228296937&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150228296937&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005)  I'm going to off the road wheels too.  With 2 out of 5 bent, I don't need that.

If these go over $450, I may as well buy the new ones at AKH Wheels.  I'm spending money I didn't want to spend, but on the other side, it will greatly improve the handling and stability of the car.  Not to mention the new look.  Those Westerns are my first choice.  Thye end in the middle of the day, si I have agood shot as long as I don't get tied up with BS at the office

Before I dump a load on rims, let's hear the final thoughts.

Sharp wheels! They'd look really cool with Red-Line tires like on some
of the old Wide Ovals - remember those?  Back in the dinosaur age
of pre-radial tires? Way back when we got our license?? Back at the
Dawn of Time??? I think they make  them on radials now... or, the
slim line 1/2 whitewalls are cool too - too wide, and they look like
something on old '50s Buick Roadmasters... think sporty!

Yessir.  Looking at them in 3D (Real life) they sit much better in the wheel wells.  The road wheels had a 4.5" spacing, these are 4".  It's amazing what the style and a 1/2" will do.

Nobody else can have a '72 Polara with them on.
They are a vintage period correct aftermarket wheel and really works with the car's body lines.
