Title: Wires
Post by: Johnny D. on March 10, 2008, 07:12:37 PM
Here's a pretty easy one...(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley14.gif)

Anyone have preferences in Spark Plug wires?

7mil vs 8mil...

Brands?

There are a lot of options...

The ignition is the standard gold box chrysler unit if that matters.

I seen your car,Mobby and based on what you use the car for,how it is set up,You don't need big fat yellow universal fit Accel wires.
Accel wires are for the Phords and Chebbies. On a Mopar big block you will have  wires too long  that dont fit right, and the color looks good only for the few minutes  out of the box before getting full of grease, oil, dirt and then burned from the exhaust causing a misfire (Been there )
I would recommend a set that fits properly, clean in appearance, and work just fine.
Niehoff wires are O.E. fitment on big blocks.I have them on my NY'er
AC Delco actually have wires that fit and work very well.Lifetime warranty to boot.Of course they will be 7MM wires which will be fine with your gold box.
Pertronix also has a nice set of Flamethrower wires for your car that works great with your combo and can handle a hotter coil .

Be sure to use the factory wire looms-there is a reason Ma placed them where she did.Do not zip tie wires together!!

Taylor makes excellent wire sets but you have to make your own lengths-depending on quality of sets you choose.Their options are endless. No big deal if you dont mind cutting and splicing your own wires. At least you know they will fit.Measure three times cut twice!! LOL
If there are any plans to go high voltage or hotter ignition boxes (Mallory,MSD) then an 8.8 wire will be needed

Standard Ignition has a tailor made set that would be perfect for you Mob.  7MM

In your case, I would go with tailor made.

You can tell by the way he describes his problems

Chin up, grin, back slightly arched backwards, Looking up, Arms extended with his palms facing outware. . . .  He says "Yeah my Motor Mount is broke"  Translation:  Tire pressure is low

The best wire sets I ever installed were the Packard Wells sets.  You had to custom cut and add yer own ends and they were semi-universal but you didn't have the No. 7 and 8 wires being several feet too long.  Back in that day, an aftermarket wire set for a Mopar big block was awful.  They'd NEVER find the factory looms and get to thier destination right.

I'm a big stickler for a tidy engine compartment.  My wires were always routed the way that they were supposed to go and with correct style boots.  Those Wells sets were the best and I hope that they are still available.  Remember that the stock size was 7mm or 5/16".

That's why I suggested the Standard Ignition set.  He doesn't have to mess with the ends and they are pretty close to the correct lengths.

I don't want his Ham Hocks wrapped sound a pair of pliars if I can help it.  Mobby doesn't have the touch for that intricate stuff yet. . .  No harm intended John.  He's better off.

Besides. .  He hasn't passed Tire Air 101 yet.

I guess that's where I am lucky.  I have my dad's pair of S. Klien & Sons lineman's pliers from his electrical engineering days.  This pair of pliers has a special crimping keyway just for spark plug wire ends...  perfect every time.

Looky

Dad also swore by Klien screwdrivers.  I bought a set two years ago, seven tools for $80.  Siss almost killed me (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

I still have the screwdrivers and she still feeds me!

I'm still hung-up on THIS

LOOK at them SHOES!  I thought my sister had big feet!  Mom and dad bought her TWO pair at a time and threw em away just so she could wear the BOXES!

Barbie's a car-killer too.  She can blow-up a nice low-mileage Oldsmobile Regency and make it beg for mercy in less-than six months!

Yea, Its gone up a dollar, which is bullcrap!. Yea some much needed
work parties, as the list goes on , most important goes timing chain,
water pump i guess and sealing up those damned oil leaks if we ever
pull the engine. We'll see how much of that we get done, depending on
time.
