Title: Our trip to Erie, and why...
Post by: Matt Aker on March 10, 2008, 03:36:37 PM
Why would anyone travel during one of the most advertised winter storms of Pennsylvania's 2007-2008 winter season?  Siss and I drove into it just north of Mercer on I-79 Friday afternoon and witnessed 15 accidents in less-than 60 miles!

Why?

My Mom had a severe heart attack.  She was air-flighted to Erie's Hamot Medical Center from Warren on early Thursday.  She was bleeding internally from the stint placed in her heart and was unconscious from late morning Thursday until the time we left today.

According to her doctors her vitals are fine, but she only awoke only once (today) for a short period of time.  She saw my dad and sister.  We wanted to stay for this chance encounter but could not...

People have heart attacks and stints inserted in America every minute of every day but why is mom's so different?  She is 58, and lightly smokes.  We've went round and round over the years...  She's 4'-10" and a real fighter!  I was taller than she when I was eleven but she NEVER took my Shiite!

Siss and I (along with Dad and Sister and Gramma) need a few prayers, you too Snotty! (You know how we feel about you...)  Thanks Folks (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

The storm.

Erie got nearly 16-inches of fresh new snow between the time we were en'route until Sunday morning.

View NW towards Erie's Mellon building and the lake.  Saturday AM

General view SW.  FWD cars plowing snow...

Sunday's adventure to the Soldiers and Sailors home.  The blue sky was a wonder to behold after the storm

This is W. 10th Street, NOT plowed...  The thrown snow is from 4WD's!  I think it's a Chevy

More winter fun...  still en'route to Erie Soldiers and Sailors home.  (Dad and I escaped to visit my grandad for a bit...)

Mom and dad just traded thier Buick Lucerne on a new Eddie Bauer Exploder.  Our Jeep was safely parked in the hotel garage.

I'm done ranting now.  Just worried about my mom...

Your Mom, from your description, sounds a lot like mine. She's also very short, about 5' 0",  tougher than nails and will turn 91 this year after experiencing lots of medical emergencies over the years. I stopped worrying about her ailments years ago because I know she's not going any where until she's darn good and ready and not one second sooner.

If I was you, I sure wouldn't be telling momma much about the road conditions you drove through. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)

My prayers will include both your mother and mine - but I suspect both would tell us to "just settle down!"

Thanks gang!

This is actually Matt, and NO I am NOT having an identity crisis (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif).  I updated my e-mail addy in my profile and am now restricted (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif)

The news wasn't too good today.  Mom's doctor decided to take her off of her respirator, which didn't go well.  Her vitals went knutzo and she had to go right back on it with an increase in pressure.  My Sister also said that her blood pressure has been all over the chart all day and she has contracted pneumonia...  I haven't spoken to dad yet, but will later after he gets home.

We luv you guys (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

Thanks to one of our mooderators I can now post again...!  Thanks Arlen!

According to dad, mom's not doing well.  He wants us to come home ASAP...  I've never seen and heard dad like this so whaddoo I do?  As soon as we can afford the trip again we're gone....  Probably Saturday or Sunday...

Thanks for the prayers and thoughts gang!  It's up to our Lord inevitably...  Mom isn't good...

Well, things are a little better as of today.  Mom is finally out of the ICU after two weeks.  She's still on the respirator but it is decreased.  She had a tracheotomy on Tuesday as it was the last resort to start weaning her from her sedation meds and the machine air.  Dad said she opened her eyes for a little bit today too!

Monday she is being transferred to a long-term cardio-pulmonary rehab facility located in Erie, so the damage to her heart is worse than her doctors first believed.

It's a step in the right direction, albeit small.  Siss and I thank yoos all for the thoughts and prayers.

I'm glad to see everyone and family is getting better.  Anyone want to come down here and fix my brother for me?

(Assisted suicides, slow poisionings, beatings are all welcomed.)

He's done with life as we know it.  Now I have to straighten out his little messes so Elaine can close the estate from my Mom.

You told me about him Steve, I wish I knew what to tell you...  Our Lord works in mysterious ways.

Dad's worried about losing his health insurance over mom's ailment.  He still has his Blue Cross Blue Shield from the refinery where he retired from.  Mom's chopper ride was $15G alone.

He told me in January that he was shopping for a sail boat, he's always wanted one....  I hope he can still get one, he's earned it!

Well you got a little good news Matt but we will keep on talkin to the man upstairs for you and yours.
Sorry again for your bro-in-law Lea but it sounds like he got a very respectful send off. I would have cried like a baby form a send off like that and I didn't even know him.
Police and Veteran send offs get me every time.

GOOD NEWS!

I got to talk to mom tonight!!!!  She's alert and finally eating hard foods!  She's able to walk with assistance but is very coherent and using her cell phone!  Her trach will come out by Monday, per her Rx.  She wants to go home and is looking forward to it.  She was tired when we spoke, but says thanks to EVERYONE for the prayers.  Siss and I thank you too...

I told mom about yoos, and she remembered a few names.  However once she's home she'll remember you ALL!  Look-out...  She's known as the general for a reason!

We can't thank you all enough...  We luv you guys and gals! (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif)

Siss and I wan't to thank you all for the e-mails, phone calls, and heart-felt thoughts and prayers!  Yer the BEST!(http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif)

Now we're concentrating on Siss' mom, who is going through her last days with us.  Sarah will be 90 in September but is not doing well.

She was 51 when her and her husband Charles adopted Siss as an infant, Charles passed away in 2001.  Sarah says she misses Charles and wants to go home...  All told they fostered 72 children in Cambria County for varying lengths of time.  They raised four from young childred to adulthood.  Susan was an RN until strickened with MS, she'll soon be living with us.  MoparSiss.  Edward (PUTZ).  David the cop.  (David has cared for Sarah and Susan for many years)

When it rains, it POURS...
