Title: Leaf Springs vs. Polaraco
Post by: Steve on February 27, 2008, 03:00:08 PM
I mentioned to a few that I had a broken spring in Polaraco.  Eaton wanted $342.00 for ONE spring and won't stand behind their broken leaf.

I found a new spring maker.  He wants around $400 for TWO springs.  WITH the bushings.  The Owner, Charles, (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif) and I spoke for quite a while.  He talked about Spring Wrap, size of arch, all sorts of good things.  Unlike the udder guys, he asked questions which are important to me.  Not only that, he is almost 1/2 the price.  Delivery is a bit longer, but you know what?  Who cares.  He will be supplying me with 2- 5 leaf springs, which are custom made for my car, for that price.  I will be buying new springs for the VOAB this summer.  Guess who the maker is gonna be? Guys. . If you are planning on buying springs, talk to these people.  They're in Colorado.

Steve, that is the manufacturer of the mains I scored for the BoaB.
I got them cheap and used the good springs that were not broken, then added a leaf for good measure.
All for $125.00 that did BOTH sides.
I would recommend Alcan as well.

These guys are a bunch of geniuses.  I LOVE IT! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

I took Polaraco on a good ride tonight.  With the new bushing and the new springs, I think we have found a new combination.  Rides like a new car.

I came up with the following to get a real nice firm, stable ride.  Corners unbelieveable!

1 set of Alcan 5 leaf rear springs for a C Body  ($465.00 Delivered with U-Bolts)
1 set of KYB shocks  $90.00
1 GOOD set of front lower bushings  $46.00 (Justsuspension)

Oh Baby.  Leanburn, wait until you drive it now! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)

Good info Steve....I have not made my mind up on if I should replace the springs in the wagon yet...the car sits not bad for 40 year old springs....(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif)

But I too will be installing KYB's all around and hope to have the front suspension redone in a few weeks.

Alcan has a long lead time.  So plan on it.

I suggest you have a leaf added when you decide to build these.  I am not sure on the wagon, mine were 4 leaf.  This time I added a leaf which made all the difference in the world.  There are allot of little things that made me happy too.  The retainers are rivited to the spring,  the springs are painted apart so the paint is in between the leaves.  The only thing he didn't provide was the center washer for these blasted rubber bushings

Well the wagon Has 7 leafs per side, 5 full and 2 half leafs, so I don't think I need the extra spring in the pack??

From Experience, the extra leaf is a good idea.  Even in a wagon.  7 leaves were supposed to take extra weight and still give you a luxury ride.  The draw back was they saged in no time.  8 Leaf was used in the cop cars so you can't go wrong.

I just experienced that with the old rear springs, 2 years old no less.  Those were the stock 4 leaf.  The new Alcans are 5 leaf.  Now I have learned to hate the 4 leaf. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)
