Title: SO what sits on top of your engine?
Post by: Johnny D. on February 20, 2008, 01:31:49 PM
Tommorow i'm pickin up that holley 770 4bbrl, Electric choke, vaccum secondaries.

The bearing is done, and so is that mount.

This will be the first new carb i'll have encountered. Luckily I worked out a payment plan for this, so the 300 bucks wont kill me. It's good to have a buddy at NAPA.(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

SO whats on your ride?

And why.

A P.O.S Edelbrock 850 that has something wrong with it.
"sneezes" and stalls when cold and sometimes when "Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration" is called upon at WOT!!
I never was very good with carbs.

I put an Edelbrock 750 cfm on mine, but also installed the Edelbrock Performer intake.  I can't see puting a better carb on top of the factory intake.

The problem with ED carbs from the factory is they are jetted lean.  You can purchase a jet kit for less than 60 bucks from Summit.  It comes with new jets, springs, and metering rods.  When done right it's goodbye pinging!

Let's remember that a Carter AFB on a '66 440 was a mere 625cfm.  It was jetted for the premium fuels from that day.  The stock AFB on my '66 NYer ran like a champ on Sunoco 94 with a little octane boost.  (You shoulda taken a ride in it after a shlop of 100 octane low-lead AV-gas...  (http://moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif))

The modern Eddy/Carter carbs are jetted for today's engines and gasolines, hence LEAN!  A stock intake versus an aftermarket intake is not the issue.  A new AFB lookalike will need a little TLC to perform well on a vintage engine and modern gas.  Our older engines required better fuels.  Even the lower octane gasolines from THAT day were a better quality when compared to today's water-and-dirt-will-burn.

Before you cut down a carburetor or intake choice, put some REAL gas in the tank!  It aint' cheap... but every local-yocal airstrip offers it.  I challenge you to a comparison to see and feel what I mean.  Todays automotive gasolines are pathetic...

I still vote for an Edelbrock 1406 for any Mopar big block!  I like to eat goooood food and so does your engine!

well my install today was a huge embarassing failure...

so... tommorow i get to try it all over again.

as of now, im leaking gas, not really getting a good spark, and everything is in the way of everything else: I.E. the coil interferes with the vacuum advance, which interferes with the fuel line... this sucker is woah bigger than the 600 that was on there... i also cant seem to decifer this ones multiple vacuum hook ups... there on on the back, two upfront, and one on the side.

on the plus, i bought the Chrysler linkage, and other than the fact that i forgot how i set up the gas pedal. it looks quite splendid.

JoHn    You need to plan better.  You should have compared what you had to where you were putting it.

When you don't have a McGiever Garage like mine, you have to planout the job before you jump in.

Title: SO what sits on top of your engine?

Hahahaha, you know Dave I was thinking the same thing. They have to
last untill he gets the sweet ones he is looking at that have the
capability to lock up when needed and as a regular mount when not under
stress. We shall keep our fingers crossed they last untill he gets the
good ones.

Who wants to set up an over/under on the mounts....

Amazingly the coil ground resistor was preventing spark and heating the wires... removed it, and now it starts... that was the spark issue.

I fixed the gas leak by ditching the metal tubing for rubber

I got a decent spring now for the pedal too...

Go figure now my car works...

Well on the 440 in the wagon I ditched the original carter, since it had been sitting for at least 15 years with no rebuild....started and idled fine but wouldn't run down the street very well.   For now I slapped on a 625 eddy with electric choke and the car runs fine.

Eventually I will be upgrading to a demonsizzler thermoquad on a spreadbore intake...gotta love those sewer pipe size secondaries....BOOOOWAAAAAAA!!!!!(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

well the way i see it is if you want a " cruiser" carb  not for all out hp go for the eddie, if ur lookin for most hp and dont care about fuel economy go for the holley. you rarely will see a eddie on a drag car......theres a reason for that. dont get me wrong i like the afb/avs style carbs, and i feel for a heavy c-body there the way to go.

My Dart has a Carter BBD and the Chrysler has an AFB.  Both are the original type, may be the original carbs for all I know.
Rebuilding the BBD went pretty well, so I'm thinking of doing the AFB this spring.  I know it hasn't been touched in the 5 years I've owned the car, so who knows how long it's been.

The funny thing is that the economy seems to have improved. When he

improve just a little bit.

    Tom
I had one Ed 850 AFB on a 68 Barracuda built 360, .484 lift 284 duration
Purple Shaft cam-never had a problem-car always had the proper amount
of fuel.
Title: SO what sits on top of your engine?
Post by: Robert F. Brogle on March 08, 2008, 01:47:34 AM
I've kind of mixed it up a bit-
'68 Newport Custom-stock (actually NOS) Carter 2 bbl.
'68 New Yorker- 800 CFM Edelbrock Thunder series AVS w/electric choke
'68 300- 750 CFM Edelbrock Performer w/ electric choke
'70 Wagon- 850 CFM Demonsizzler Thermoquad
'70 'vert- same as wagon

As far as driveability is concerned, the Newport wins, followed closely behind by the wagon and convertible.  Only problem with the TQ's is they don't like the hot start, especially the wagon.  I'm still kind of torn, I may TQ-ize the 2 '68's yet, but that would mean intake and carb linkage issues.  If you are unfamiliar with demonsizzler, go to www.thermoquads.com (http://www.thermoquads.com)

 with a 1411 reman Edelbrock

and a dual snorkel air cleaner to top that off

which will mean the 440Source aluminum "Stealth" heads will also be on the engine (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley15.gif)
