Title: Really weird water pump problem... ever see this?

Started the '64 to do a carb adjust - coolant everywhere!

I recall that someone here (Chris in AZ maybe?)  had corrosion thru the back wall of the timing chest/inner pump housing on an LA 318, losing coolant.  This one's in a different location... sort of makes you wonder about the AL Mope was using back then, or the acidity of water and/or coolant used!

You're lucky Rog, the one I had dumped coolant into the crankcase!

Hard to imagine it eating thru all that casting metal, but guess it did!

This is a Poly 318, anyone know if the part is the same as on an LA ,which would be much easier to find?  I know the water pump exits out the opposite side, but maybe this  part is shared?

As far as I know it is the same part, so not an issue. Water pump exiting the opposite side is no big deal.

Good to know, thanks, that will make finding one a lot easier.

I believe it is the same.  Darn it Roger?  I just scrapped one

318, 340 and 360 are all the same, should also have the timing mark in the right place, too.

Luckily a local guy I've gotten stuff from has one off a Poly so I know it's right. Now to pull everything  off needed to get to it for replacement....I've got 3 cars torn apart at the moment... grrrr.

Now would also be a wonderful time to add a new timing chain if it has slack in it.

I think the Poly's were steel gears, so it would be a inexpensive job too

Good advice, but this poly only has 42k on it... "If it ain't broke" comes into play.

Yeah, that's 42K miles and almost as old as Steve! Thing is, a double roller chain can be installed for next to nothing and then you can be sure it is going to hold together, this is the weak link right now.

Even at 42K Rog.  They stretch.  But you'll know when it's open.

I agree with the others...replace the chain.  You have everything apart, and the chain is 40+ years old...regardless of miles...and it is quick and cheap insurance.

Look, believe me I understand the rationale, but I'm selling it, I'm way underwater already, and I'm not inclined to further any expenses that won't be recoverable...capiche?  It's gonna be a loss as is.
