Title: whole Differn't Mope around here....
Post by: firedome on April 26, 2013, 12:45:17 PM
With all the many Mopars we've had over the years, they were always C bodies, with a couple A bodies (Darts/Demon) and R-bodies sprinkled in... and that's odd really, since my favorite Mopar to drive, ever, was my Grampy's '62 Dodge Dart 440 hardtop (which was a B-Body for '62, since the little Dart A body started in '63.), it was a light feeling, lively car to drive, sporty even... well... the C dominance around here is about to change. Have stayed away from B bodies because everyone wants 'em and they do tend to be pricier than C bodies.  Also we needed the space with 3 kids. But I don't need that space now, and have been looking for a change, came across a deal, and a good thing with B's that is that repop parts are plentiful. Which is nice because it looks like I'll be needing some very shortly... just picked up a '64 Dodge 440 sedan, details & pics to follow soon.

Anyone here have any experience with the early 62-64 B body cars? sure is different that my 58 Winnie.

Had a friend with a 64 Custom 880, a real nice car, but not too much difference actually, last year for the pushbutton transmission I think, bolt-on flange for the transmission with a rear pump vice front pump, engine, which one do you have? His had a 361 B engine, torsion bars and not sure about a frame or not, might be a C body thing by this age. Love the grille and tail lights.

I had a 62 440 wagon that was pretty nice.  Not many changes between 62 and 72

The Custom 880 was basically a Newport with a 61 Dodge front end, introduced mid-year when the radically downsized 330/440/Polara, the first B body, sort of flopped and the Dodge dealers screamed for a true full sized car. My neighbor was a Dodge sales mgr and I remember him complaining they didn't have a car to compete with F and C even... ironically the 62 Dodge was one of the best cars ever, driving wise, but the public just wasn't ready for it. THose 62 Dodges and Pyms only weighed 3100-3200 lbs, they truly cut the fat out, just great cars to drive, and just the right size for a car imo.

Ed this one has a 318 poly engine and 727. Has a Weiand intake and 4 bbl. Lots of potential in the polys I'm told, might be fun to breath on this one a bit.., I'm not totally above laying a  patch now and then, old as I am... so of you hasn't driven one of these early Bs owes it to yourself to try one, they really are a revelation. So light and responsive, and no power robbing emission controls.

You couldn't get any uglier than that 880.

hmmm... '61 Dart or Polara maybe?  now THAT was a really ugly car... yet cool.
'60 and 61 Plyms weren't exactly beauty queens either,
took Mopar years to recover from that disaster.
Starting around '63 they radically improved.
Some think the '64 Dodge the best ever.
No one could touch them at the drags.

Yeah, there were a couple years in there that were not so good looking, 61 and 62, whereas 63 and up were pretty sweet. Yes, the poly 318 can have some muscle in them, always a little more of a big block myself, but the poly can be fun, lots of parts interchange between the A and LA engines, finding stuff isn't too much of an issue.

Now the 64 Custom 880 had a nicer looking rear end than the 63.

62 Chryslers were pretty good looking.  I always liked the head lights, Dash boards and the wrap over tail lights.  The profile wasn't too bad either

Tried the pic again... it doesn't fit again, it's 2.7 Mb, can someone resize and post?

In '63 Elwood Engle took the radical '62 (which I like actually),
cleaned up the sides and back and stuck the Thunderbird C-pillar that
was so  popular onto the 330/440/Polara and the Savoy/Belvy/Fury
and transformed their looks.  '64s were even cleaner looking. '62
to 64s B Bodies were real terrors at the dragstrips due to their light
weight bodies compared to brands F, C and Pontiac.

You can bet those JCWhitney covers will go away... pronto!!
Stock covers or Cragars are what I have in mind.
Yep she's very original, the interior has wear, but I even found 3 of 4 NOS original seat covers for her.
She will be a fun driver after years of Jap SUVs, but will still keep the Trooper for dump runs.
