Post by: firedome on February 02, 2012, 04:49:31 AM

OK lets test your ForwardLook knowledge... here's what I'm hoping will be safely in my garage

hey, why did this pic get squished...??

Hope it doesn't look like this when it gets here!!

at some point soon - weather &c permitting.  What model/year (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/attachments/58/58W.jpeg)is it? The Spitfire 354 I mentioned in an Engine thread is a major giveaway:

Was the Edsel like rear trim an option?  Some seem to just have a straight chrome piece the whole length of the car.  Some seem to have the "Dartline" trim which adds more on the front fender/door, and some are like this one.

Yep '58 Windsor... a Spring Special!  The extra trim above the
rain gutter was featured along with  triple trim strips on the
trunk lid, on either side of the license plate cove, and the "Flight
Sweep" color insert on the r door and fender, which was an option,
alaong with several new Spring colors.  Side trim could also be
just a single straight stainless strip from the f fender to the tail,
or no side trim at all, for the real plain Jane look.  Dartline
trim was also a late year upgrade available, which to my eye was
designwise kinda weird and incoherent, whereas the Flight Sweep trim
works well with the fins... imo.

354 2bbl std on Windsor, 354 4 bbl on Saratoga, and 4 bbl 392 on the
NY'er and 2 x 4bbl 300D.  This one has cast iron TorqueFlight,
unlike my '58 FireSweep (same 122" wb as Windsor and both were built at
Dodge  Hamtrammck)  which had 2 spd PowerFlite.  I'm
glad this has the much superior TF.

Anyone who wants a FL had best look hard and soon, they are going
overseas at an increasing rate... since selling the 'Sweep been looking
again for over a year for a good '57/58 DeS or Chry 4 dr hardtop
that was still affordable, and they are really getting scarce, believe
me... a Plym or Dodge is a little easier, but still not common...
been into these cars for over 40 years.

Very rust free New Mexico car...  getting too old for serious
bodywork. Even the chrome is driver decent. She will never be a show
car, but Winnie will be driven!

BTW the guy says he also has a '57 DeSoto STATION WAGON rust
free....  2 brothers who are car scavengers , they have about 40
out there in the desert SW. I was tempted but love 4 dr hardtops
best... I haven't told the FL site yet. Anyone interested let me know
and I'll put you in touch. Those wagons are SUPER rare, I think it's a
3 seater too!  You can get $1000 transpo NM -> NY.

Nice offer, thanks Steve, but I don't have the time for a trip, and
it's paid for already anyhow, plus he's going to haul a small fire
truck from Tuscon to Las Vegas for the seller, which I arranged, so
that's how I got a deal, I'd normally be around $1500 with diesel
prices like they are....

My point being someone should grab that wagon, you can't do a rusty Eastern body for a grand!!

Off your old black '59? there may be some minor stuff in common, and
tranny, frame,  but:  body, trim, engine, glass (4 dr sedan vs
4 dr hardtop) all are different.. '59 was first year for B wedge in
Chryslers/Imps, whereas all the other divisions got 'em or early type-A
blocks in '58.  But who knows, I might end up needing a good cast
iron TF.

Got a set of swivel seats? Now that would be sweet!

The one good thing other than body condition is that it's complete,
missing no trim. That stuff is really hard to find.  Took me 2 yrs
to find one rear fender trim piece for the 'Sweep, and I know where to
look too.
