Title: 1968 Dodge Polara Production Figuress
Post by: Robert Rottman on November 18, 2011, 06:37:55 AM
Does anyone have the breakdown on production figures for the 1968 Dodge Polara line?  I'm specifically looking for the number of 68 Polara 500 convertibles built but to see the production figures for all the (full size) body styles would be even better. I did a search on-line but only found some ballpark guesses. Many said that a breakdown is unavailable. I have trouble believing that.

Thanks, Bob

They're not available Bob.  If you recall, that data was destroyed in a fire years back.  I have prices and weights, but no production numbers

The closest we can come is that we know a total of 87,000 full size
standard (non-500) Polaras of ALL body styles were built, and 7400
Polara 500 and Monaco 500 coupes and 'verts were built during model
year 1968.  1970 and later Dodge exact figures ARE known, broken
down by model and body style: in 1970,  842 Polara 500
convertibles were built. 1968 had considerably better industry sales
than 1970, which was a recession year. In 1968 Plymouth exact
production is known: 4483 Fury III and 2489 Sport Fury 'verts were built, approx 2:1 ratio of F3 vs SF.  In 1970
only 1952 Plymouth full size 'verts (all F3s) were built. By interpolating, one might infer '68
Polara 500 'vert production to be higher than 1970, perhaps around
1400-1600 for Polara 500s and maybe 3000 for standard Polara 'vert
production... that's the best we can do, a rough but semi-educated
guess.

Thanks Roger...That's excellent information and well explained. I take it there must have been a fire between 1968 and 1970 at the Chrysler records department in Detroit?

Yes, it involved Dodge records only, exact numbers are available for all Chrysler and Plymouth models and body styles for those years, whereas precise Dodge model breakdown numbers are unknown except for totals.
