Title: What paint to use
Post by: 300rag on September 11, 2011, 03:50:31 PM
I am refinishing some under hood parts and need to know if I should be using satin or semi-gloss black for the fan shroud, fan blades and water pump pulley. What about the air cleaner as well ?

The shroud I'd paint flat black.  Then the fan and pullies Semi-gloss, or satin black.  Air claner I'd paint gloss black.

I don't think the factory air cleaners were real glossy but more of a semi-gloss, I know our bought-new 67 Fury was that way.

I used Eastwood's Underhood Black.

The air-cleaner I have has that "flakey," krinkled look to it.  Don't know what it's called; it is a flat though.  But, that was used on the ACs from '70 and up.

Here's a picture where you can see the AC:

Rexus's pic looks like how I remember them new and all the 70-77 Cs I had.

Paint or style?  My AC is from a '70.  It is not the original, but the original single snorkle one I removed is in the krinkle/flat style too.  Rex's is pre-'70, I'll agree, but it's style (with round holes) was not used after '69.

Don't know about the style, I was commenting on the shine-i-ness of the
paint on Rex's aircleaner looking how I remember it is all.

I thought that was what you were referencing.  I got my AC at a Mopar swap meet.  It is '70 specific and was the type used on the 300 Hurst cars, but as for the other C's, I must admit, I can't even imagine one.

300 Hursts may well have had crinkle (krinkle?) black on the a/c, I
know they had a lot of custom touches... one of those stories: I had a
chance to buy a nice 300 Hurst around 1982 for like 3k and didn't...

HA!  We all seem to ahve that story - the one that got away.  I had my butt in a '65 L 4-speed car in the mid-'90s I could have had for $6,200.  To this DAY I wish I had persued making that happen.  The car appeared on ebay a few years ago, in England, untouched from the day I saw it, and the owner was asking 7 grand.  It did not sell.

Just out of curiosity - why is the OP painting the fan shroud?  That was a plastic part that was unpainted.  Any "gloss" it had was from the smoothness of the surface.

Wouldn't powdercoating a semi-gloss give the proper sheen (and durability) to the fan blades and waterpump pulley?  I just don't trust rattle-can paint to last all that long on engine parts that move.

I've been using it on the Diamond.  It is pretty good stuff.  Lays down nice, perfect finish every time.  Run resistamt, sticks pretty good.

I'm repainting it because it is a two piece metal shroud, not plastic.
