Title: Rallye wheels on Cs
Post by: firedome on March 25, 2011, 05:33:49 AM
I'm gonna take the good tires & wheels off my '70 vert and put them on my '71 sedan.

I really like the look of the Mopar Rallye wheels (the ones with the
roundish holes with trim rings and center caps),  Classic
Industries catalog has them in all sizes prety cheap.  So will a
15 x 7 with 4 1/2 bolt pattern and backspacing of  4 1/4" work on
a C ?  What would be a decent but cheap tire for them?

Put Autopar on it..

I have a set of 15x7 that I'm thinking about putting on my C... not sure yet though.. center caps are tough to find and expensive

Autopar?

Classic Industries has all the styles of center caps, but not cheap either. I figure start with the wheels and get caps later.

In Canada its a brand of tires that you can order in from a Chrysler Dealership under the mopar brand..

if I'm not mistaken the Canadian Autopar tires are made for BF Goodrich plant for Chrysler..

I'm running that size of wheel with the Shelby Cal. 500s on my Newport - they fit well.  I wish I had gone with a larger tire however.

Anyone have a pic of rallyes on a C?

I have an old picture of them on the New Yorker, but not a "real C."  I thought they looked great on the NY, but at 14" were WAY too small for those HUGE drums that car had.  15s would have fit well.

Those are the Road wheels with the rectangular slots, Steve, that were
an option on C's. What I want is the Rallye Wheels with rounded holes,
like on the pic Chris just posted... looks good, thanks Chris!!  I
think I like 'em with the brushed trim rings instead of polished, they
came either way.  I can't get AutoPar here, also they're pricey I
bet, if thru a dealer. So what's a good but cheap modern 225 70 radial
tire for 15 x 7?  I'm talkin well under 100 ea if possible!... I
got a local price for Cooper Trendsetter P225/70R15 at around $75, can
I do better?... eh Mr. Tire?? aka Leaaaburn...

I'm surprised a dealer would be cheaper on anything!  At least
here in the  States. They don't call 'em Stealer for nothin!

You can buy them new through Coker Tire, Stockton Wheel, or Vintage Wheel.  But, they are GOLD!!!  You can almost buy new TQ-Ds for the prices they ask for Mopar stuff.

I even saw at the mopar nationals you can get plastic center caps that look EXACTLY like the metal ones... 4 for $80...

What a great looking wagon!!  Those are Road Wheels, optional on
Cs.  Rallye Wheels have round holes, and never came on, and were
not available, on Cs at the time as far as I know.

Good to know about the AMC wheel caps, thanks.

The later AMC caps look like the ones in that picture.  Earlier ones do not.  If you look at some of the pictures I've posted of the Gremlin, the caps on the Indy 500s are AMC Rallyes from '73 and earlier.

Thanks... I wasn't sure about the wheels. I do know that they aren't original, because the guy I got it from told me he had to fabricate some spacer plates for the front, but he didn't have the original stock ones anymore. I'd rather get a set that fit without a spacer, but for now, these are ok.

Are you using a spacer for the center caps or the whole wheels?  Those wheels are Chryslers (in your picture), they should fit without a spacer.

I haven't taken them off yet, so I don't know. They were on when I got it, and the guy I bought it from told me about the spacers. I thought he meant the wheels, but maybe he meant the center caps.

He could have used full-wheel spacers for those AMC caps to fit.  AMC, like Ford, used a smaller center hole than Mopar.  Here would be a test: take off one wheel, remove the cap, and then see if the whell will mount without the spacer.  That would answer the question.  If so, you would just need to swap the caps.

I had wheels just like those on the New Yorker I sold to Hobby (same black centers) - they fit perfectly!  Prior to using those wheels I had 14" Rallyes and needed a spacer.

That's what I was saying earlier - they are gold.  You have to buy the trim rings seperate as well.  Like I said, new TQ D's are cheaper!
