Title: Gas Mileage - not as bad as I thought!
Post by: Snotty on November 13, 2010, 03:49:18 PM
As many of you know I've been screaming about my lousy mileage for the seven years I've owned my Newport.  I just discovered something....

Having replaced 2 fouled plugs and one bad plug wire, I filled up yesterday and noticed that the odo was at an even 92,000 miles.  (That means I've driven it 31,000 miles since I got it in Novemebr, 2003.  Not bad.)

OK, before leaving the station I reset my trip odo to 000.0.  I drove the4 car yesterday and today and noticed...

...that my trip odo records the miles at a slower rate that the main odo!!!  Right now my odo is showing 32,065 while the trip odo shows 54.8!  That's a loss of 10 miles.  If doubled tghat would be 2o at 120.  I've been calculating my milage by the trip odo.  Therefore...

..I'VE BENN GETTING BETTER THAN I THOUGHT!!!

I'm glad of that.

Out.

If you look close it's probably slipping when it goes from 9 to 10 (and 19 to 20 etc)  Mine does that once in a while.   I guess turning 3 drums instead of 2 is just enough extra force that it will hang up for a mile or two before flipping over.

Even my restored unit does this Dan.  Pretty frustrating.

Don't listen to Steve.  I was seeing 9-10 around town and 10-12 on the highway with the best ever of 15 - once.

Good thought, but not my problem.  I watched it lose a mile in five - in between the odo turning to 0.

The odo and trip-meters on the dash are sometimes terribly inaccurate. Use a GPS-device to regsiter trips, it will give a much more precise figure of the miles you've driven.

Thanks Sjak, but Real Men don't use GPS devices.  We use maps and we never get lost!! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

My MPG just went way up too!  I went for a "70" mile round trip last week on the "trip" odometer. This this time I paid attention to the reading on the regular odometer and it showed the trip as being 102 miles.  Since Phoenix is set up in a 1 square mile grid pattern, it's pretty easy to know how far you've actually gone (close enough anyway). Using  some quick calculations from the road map I figured the actual distance was between 98 and 101 miles, so my speedo is pretty accurate, but the trip odometer is junk, and I've never seen it go past 92 miles.......I think the little gear wheels are stripped out right there.

Makes you fell better, doesn't it??  :-)  I am actually driving my Newport now more than I ever have.  I came quite close to driving it out here to Wasco today - perhaps tomorrow I will.

However, it was foggy here - don't want to be cold.  (Dont want to put the top up either.)  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

You could pick up a few MPG if you just took the shrimp and left the shrimp boat at the dock

Thanks.

Honestly, I like cold weather and miss living in Sierra County - and even Carsno City NV where we were before that.  But, I will admit that there are times when the hot, desert climate of Kern County has its advantages.  When I can drive my 'vert with the top down in the winter is one of them.

The opposite of that is the 110* crap we get in the summer.  There's no way I drive with the top down then!!  Sheesh!

My Newport's original color was silver - or "Metallic" as it was called.  I want to return it to that color, but Jesus will probably return first - same for painting Jerry's car.  That is one area I never seem to get around to because the cost scares me so.

I'll paint any car for $99.95.  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

You remember that one?

You could take it to Chris, threaten him with a curse.  Maybe you can get it done for cost.

I've given Chris a lot of thought - without the curse though.  I talked with him about the Grem at Fall Fling.

Sheib is now $699.95 - that's who painted the Stratus and the Neon last year.

Hi snotty,

I have completely read you mileage problem. I thing this problem would be occur in the case of drive car with LPG gas because the gas kit create more problem in case of use car. So drive car with petrol or diesel because the engine is only comfort with desire fuel.

Fine!

I think Lillian wants me to clink on that link...but I won't.

However Lillian,  my can runs on Premium Unleaded, not LPG, so I don't think you have read all of my posts after all.

On this subject, I was reading an original article on the '70 Hurst two days ago.  They list the average milage of the car, with the TNT 440, as being 12 MPG.  I guess I should not ecpect more.

However, in the same article they say a Gremlin gets 16.  What???  The Grem was introduced April 1, '70 as a six-banger only, and that was a small 199 cid motor.  16???

I will continue to expect more....
