Title: transmossion wont shift

ok... 91 dodge ram, 360ci and the overdrive trans. every so often, only after driving for a few hours, the tranny womt shift out of first unless i put it in neutral and rev the crap out of it. then its fine for a few more hours. it does it also after driving for a while if i shift from reverse to drive. also, it will shift on its own from drive to 2nd and i have to rev it again. whats up with it??(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif)

When is the last time you had the fluid/filter changed?

i did it about 2 months ago. it helped a bit because it started doing this a lot when i bought it. changed the filter and it was better, not great, but better. maybe i need to flush it out.

Sounds like the valve body may be contaminated.  Best thing to do is remove it, put it on a clean table, use a large towel or shirt so the balls don't roll around, and take the top off.  Carb cleaner and some air ought to fix it.
 
The other possibility is the govonor is stuck.  That isn't so easy to fix.  Tail shaft has to come off.
 
518's, which is what you have, are nothing more than glorified 727's.  They're pretty simple, unlike a Turbo 350

Wether it is the throttle body or governor, the revving increases the line pressure enough to overcome the sticking for a little bit. Remember, the throttle body and governor both are precision machined parts and all it takes is a small bit of dirt, clutch or steel shaving to jam a valve into a certain location. Even clean fluid can have a couple chunks of crud the size of half a pin head floating around in it. Dropping the valve body and tail shaft for the governor isn't that difficult a job. A little messy, sure, but not that difficult to do.

The other problem will be that the converter will still be full of contaminated fluid. I went to an oil change place and had the entire system pumped and replaced.

They hooked up to a cooler line and the converter draws in the new fluid and pushes it through the system while pushing out the old fluid out the other line into a holding tank.

It fixed the slipping problem I had with the Sebring.. I couldn't believe the difference.

That might be an option instead of dropping the valve body.

Those converters have a drain in them.
