Title: Polaraco Dents, Scratches and Rust
Post by: Steve on September 18, 2010, 02:39:57 PM
Finall got to this.

Had a rust hole in the trunk lid, above the lip, a big scratch in the right rear quarter, a nasty dent on the opposite side, rust popping out from the vinyl top, Some nasty surface rust around the rear wheel and lower rear quarter.  Unfortunaty waited too long to fix the rust around the wheel. .  .  I got some rust through

Are you kidding?   I did this car 3 years ago.  Other than a fresh coat of wax every spring and fall, I haen't touched the body.  I've just been making it better.  Been tweeking things.  I haven't touched the suspension or steering in 2 years. . .

So some touch up body work is no biggie.  Besides, I'm fixing someone elses bad work.

RUST SUCKS!

It sucks even harder when you have to scrape up decent paint to fix it, too.

Eastwood makes a real good rust converter.  It's a 100 bucks a gallon, but you spray it on with a gun and clean with water.  They make an aerosol, but I'm not too impressed with it yet.

Keep in mind, people,Steve drives Polaraco year round including winter.
One of the ideas behind having MPFI was increased reliability, and no cold weather starting issues.
Some rust is inevitable from winter driving..

Yeah. . .I put 45,000 on this car since it was done.  The first 5K were with milk crates.  LOL

Well I learned something about 2 stage painting.

I had a couple of aerosols made up with the color because it was easier.  But one of the cans didn't work, so I had to stretch what I had.  It actually went pretty far.  But there were a few spots where I got some dirt in the base color.  So I saned it with 400 and blew the clear over it..       MISTAKE!  Now I have blotches where I sanded.  So Off I go to the paint store tomorrow to get more color.

At least it's an easy fix. . . .

The other thing I screwed up on was cleaning my gun when I worked on the Fury.  I forgot to finish cleaning the gun and I spit out tine flecks of blue in the clear (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)  Now I have to sand it all out and start over. On the clear.  At least it's clear.  I guess I'll just re clear the whole trunk lid and tops of the fenders now. . . .  Easier than spot repairing and allot less blending.

That's not why it Rusted Tom. . . .

The paint got cut when the top was trimmed and the water got under it.  Otherwise, that will never rust.  Bob and I made sure of it

I have always liked vinyl tops, but the more I see as they get older, the more I want to avoid them.  They must hold water like a sponge.

Steve:  that's why I had you scrounge for that window trim at Moore's for me.  So I can dump the vinyl roof.  I understand that the St. Rege package is what makes it distinctive but I'm the one who has to live with it.

It wasn't the vinyle top that caused the damage damed it.  It was a razor blade!

When doing small areas you can get a Preval propellent/sprayer kit
which allows you to use quart or gallon paint, you just put
paint/thinner in the glass bottle that screws to the propellent
cylinder/spray valve. I always get a qt. mixed up when I  buy a
car for touch up and repairs, if the whole thing doesn't need a
respray.  Preval costs about maybe $10?

It's not mine.  It's another one of Steve's "It's almost October and I gotta finish it up before winter"  projects.

I ended up doing from the rear doors back, except below the molding on the left side.  That was recently done at the body shop.  There we so many spots it just wasn't worth it anymore.  And I still missed a few little spots.  Just painted over them.

There spots of orange peel here and there.  Wet sanded out most of it and the dirt.  It's really hard to do a pro job outside in unpredictable weather, wind, bugs.. . .

For some time I wanted to light up the middle of the tail lights.  I tried many different things.  Nothing fit.  But I found these LED's in a strip that are perfect.  What do you think?

I think I'll order one for the other side.

My wifes 2010 Mustang GT has sequential tailights also. OK I know but it is an all around better car than the new Challenger. Besides that it's what the wife wanted. All you married guys know the old saying, Happy Wife, Happy Life! I just call it Petty Blue instead of Grabber Blue LOL.(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/attachments/30/P8280001_01.JPG)
