Title: Fluid Dampers. Good Stuff.
Post by: Steve on July 18, 2010, 12:39:20 PM
I installed a fluid damper on the 5.9 to try to dampen some of the vibrations.

Yeah Baby!  The fluid damper took out 90% of the engine vibrations.  It's probably more than the damper can handle.  I know where the problem is, I just haven't had to time to take the inspection shield out and grind some of the weight off the balancing weights.  I should have changed the torque converter.and gotten a factory balance on the 360.  I'm just going to drill the weights to off set the welding

I would just do it Lea.  You don't have to worry about that 42 year old rubber then.  Not to mention how smooth a balanced engine will be. . . .

Steve, on a serious note, this is one time I know you're wrong.  Sorry.  Remember back when  had a vibration in The Nyb  and it turned out to be the TC?  The first thing I thought of was to use a fluid damper and after researching it, I found out they do NOT smooth out vibrations. That is NOT the intended purpose of using one.  I can give you all the links if you want but you can google it yourself.  I think you are experiencing the placebo effect or you just really had a garbage damper to begin with.

Why not run the B&M flex plate?  I used one on the 360 I put in the 70 sport fury, so I could still use the stock 70 904 and converter.  I initially didn't realize this was an issue and boy did that sucker shake!!  After the flex plate swap, and I didn't have to pull the tranny to do it either, all was smooth as ice.(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

Yeah I hear ya Stan.  But it worked and that's what is important.  I just need to smooth it out some more.
