Title: Column swap
Post by: 300rag on May 30, 2010, 11:06:15 AM
What would be involved with replacing the regular column on my 65 300 with a tilt only column? Car is a 4 speed and column comes from a column shift 65 NY. Can this be swapped from the rubber coupler on up or do I have to go all the way to the steering box?

From experience, you'll need to go all the way to the slip coupler.  The mid shaft is usually different.POLARACO2010-05-30 21:24:07

Swapping a steering column is not that difficult.  Perhaps finding what you are looking for would be.  I would think that you could use a number of columns from different cars, Dodges and Plymouths both.  Once you attach your Chrysler steering wheel you would not be able to tell the difference.

Key phrase is, "I think."

The splines on the wheel might be different for a tilt vs. non tilt.  If I am not mistaken, the tilt colums were GM (Saginaw) units.

I should have the new column this weekend, but probably won't get to work on it for a while. Different splines won't matter much since I'm changing to an aftermarket wood wheel anyways. The other issue is to see what I can do to hide the shifter hole. If not, I might have a 65 tilt column for sale.

That's what a hacksaw, grinder, bondo, sandpaper and primer/paint is designed for to do it properly.

I have the column out of that 300 I just scrapped and will have my Red 300 here in a couple of weeks.  I'll see what they look like side by side.
