Title: Big Blue 68 Fury What to do?
Post by: Steve on May 12, 2010, 09:04:41 AM

Since my inventory got whittled down by 3 cars. . .  I guess the Big Blue is next.  Between this and big red, I have plenty of things to do.  I can turn this one faster than the red car.  And it is registered and insured.

I have a 360 here I was going to rebuild.  But I have a 440 that is rebuilt I can use.  I had plans on converting this to a 4 speed, from the three speed and putting the 360 in it.

With all the crap I have, I have a set of Hi-pro exhaust manifolds, The cam is not bought yet for the 440 or the 360.  I can make allot of room either way.

WHAT SHOULD i DO?

You know what I would do......

440
4 speed

It's as simple as that.  Don't wuse around with it.  Being practical has got you, what?  A kick in the azz?  Have some fun with it.  You're suppose to enjoy this stuff.  Not make it pain in the azz.

Is this to flog or keep?

If it's a keeper then I'd say 440/4spd, but if finances are a consideration then I'd go 360/4spd.  Since the small block 4 gear stuff, and engine stuff will be a bit cheaper.

Well that's the catch Biran

I have the trans already.  (you wanted the shifter remember?)  I have both engines, the 440 is fresh, the 360 is a low miler.  Both still need an equal amount of money to finish,

I'll keep this for a while. . .  so it's kind of interesting.  Either way, I would push the engines out.

I'm still not convinced this is the big block is the way to go.

For 1500 bucks and some boring, I can turn that 360 into a monster too.  Less body conversion for me.

Well, since the wire harness didn't sell for the vert, I have a under hood harness for a big block now. . .   I'd still have to consider a 26" rad though.  I happen to have a 26" support

Well I know most people just love having a big block, but the small block over the front wheels gives the car a whole different feel and attitude on the street.  Some of my favorite cars over the years were small block cars.

And like you say Steve, $1500 and you have a big inch stroker in there as well.

1500 buys me a 408 block at 30 over.  And it's balanced.  Geee  decisions decisions

No replacement for displacement, 408 is the way to go

The problem is I know the 440 would sell better, but I have a pile of crap here for the small blocks too.  Including 2 Mopar Electronic ignition sets.  There's one in Big Blue already.  Big Blue also has a Holley Double Pumper in it.  I got headers for it too.

I need more convincing. . .  LOL

And then I still have the Magnum 318 laying here.  That has a slight cam already.  That motor needs nothing but maybe some porting.

I'm still open minded.  but not decided on what to do

Well I think the simple fact of a 408" stoker will balance out the fact that it's not a big block, if and when the time comes to sell it.  Especially a stroker and a 4speed, and then some front adn rear swaybars.....Mmmmmmm

And I think with all the extras you have around for the small block I'd go that route.  After selling old blue, my 87 dodge ram 360...I'm going to have a tone of spare small block parts as well.(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

If you can build a 408" stroker based on a 360 block, with a dished piston to accept a set of EQ magnum heads such as these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170357895977&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170357895977&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) They are drilled so you can use the LA style intake manifolds which there is a better selection and way cheaper than the MP magnum stuff. These flow almost as good as the eddys and a whole lot cheaper. Get out that carbide and you can realy wake em' up. Stainless valves, good to .515" lift and most important....NEW castings. Hughes sells them, but a lot more. Put in a .480 lift XE cam w/ the 1.6" rockers and it will bring you close to the limit of the spring interference,..or if you want to get jiggy..... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370227327117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370227327117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) The small block just feels a whole lot lighter on the front end and if you throw the battery in the trunk, it is closer to neutral ,unless you would use me as a hood ornament,....then you would probably need a Briggs and Statton under the hood to get it close to neutral!!!!(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

I dunno if I will go that wild. . But it's a thought. I don't have allot of money to play with. . .

But you are right. . . That would be one hello a motor.  Give a 440 a good run

Actually, it looks like you won't have time to play with this thing anymore so give it to me and I'll show you that it was meant for a 440...

That's quite a vivid imagination you have there
