Title: Another New Ride
Post by: Robert Rottman on April 24, 2010, 06:06:09 PM
Another new ride arrived for me today...this Desoto pretty much fulfills my "Christine" dream...at least for now. Big fins...push button tranny...L-350 motor...it's very nice. Thank the good Lord for the miracle of getting me that refund back from MLC! This car gives me something fine to show for it.

I gotta see thee Bob fleet at the Long branch this year..
Love that Desi,Bob. As far as I'm concerned,it will get more attention than a Christine car.
The Desoto is more obscure--when do you ever see one?
Great score.
Still selling the 70 F3??

That's the car that got me hooked on Mopars in the first place when my grandfater came home in one when I was just 9 years old.   Beautiful!  Absolutely beautiful!

Very nice find! What is it exactly...year and model? What is an L 350?

It's a 1958 DeSoto Firesweep...the entry level DeSoto from 1957-1959...the front clip of this car is actually based on the Dodge Coronet. They made about 5600 of them. The L-350 was a one year only motor...Chryslers' first wedge big block which subsequently was enlarged to the 361 and the 383...Correct me if I'm wrong on this fellow gearheads. I'm not really up on the details of the motors as I should be. I have a feeling I'll begin learning a bit more now.

Thanks for the (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) guys...
Bob

Stunning

I believe you are correct on the engine.  The 350 was used in Dodge for several years (D500) if I remember, 57 to 59.  Then, as you said, the motor progressed into the 361 and 383.

NICE!!!!  When you decide you gotta do the Christine thing Bob,  we'll talk !!

I know a lot of the 58  'Sweeps out there - I'm not familiar with this one - where'd it come from?

Almost the same car as my '58 FireSweep 4 dr Hardtop Sportsman that I just sold in February.

350 in 2 bbl form was found on FireSweeps only, the 350 4 bbl version was
optional on '58 Dodge and std on '58 Fury. Bored to make 361, which was
std on 58 FireDome and FireFlites. 350 was one year only - 1958.  NOS Pistons and rings are rare rare rare!!

Bob does it have the original color keyed rubber floor mats in lieu of
carpeting? That's how they came and very few have survived. They also
tended to rust the floors out from condensation.

Roger...not sure about the rubber floormats...I'll ask the former owner...There's brand new carpeting in there now....other than that, I'm told it's all original.

That sure is one pretty Firesweep. The folks at the National Desoto Club have a board with many knowledgeable folks. Also check out Desotoland.Com.  Their moderator, Dave Duricey is a Desoto Authority.
Will you be making the trip to The Chryslers at Carlisle this July?

NDC has a good website - I'm "Firedome" on there too.

Where'd this car come from Bob?

Rog...it came from St Cloud, Fla. If you look on Allpar.com under Desoto...you'll see the former owner with his car. Wonderful guy...very honest and he described the car very accurately. After looking her over good this past weekend I continue to be very pleased with the car. He got back to me about the rubber mats...Yes, he removed the original rubber mats and put the carpeting in...so other than that, she's all original. I'll have to check out the NDC...thanks!

Got it home a week or so ago...The photo I posted in Stan's thread was the day it arrived. The photos above are what the guy sent me except for the last one (obviously)...which I took myslelf in my backyard. I found it on a Craigslist ad...in Cleveland, SC. An elderly gentleman owned it for the last 25 years. Sure looks to be a rust free car...I couldn't find any bondo anywhere...Even the trunk floor is untouched. Undercarriage is clean with a bit of surface rust on the outer floor pans. It's pulling to the right hard so I know the brakes will need work. I think the front left is locked up. The guy restored it 15 years ago and hardly drove it so there will be a few things that need attention I'm sure. I finally found (very close to) what I've been looking for...just didn't come in red. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif) It has a 301 w/ the 4 barrel (power pack) and dual exhausts. PS and PB too.

Sweep is my favorite too, naturally... that gold '57 Belvy is better than any red '58!

Unlike the evil Christine, your car is an angel
Actually,Bob.Your  57 Plymie is similar in color to Miss Belvedere.
The only differences I know is Miss Belvedere had the 2bbl 303 single exhaust.
Steve and I visited her in 2008

Oh,and God found you your car of your heavenly dreams  and not pulled out from a  grave.

Put it in a hole for 50 years and it will be rust red.

I'll bet Chris would do one hello a job and fix all the odd things too.  I could easily put money on that man

Thanks guys...for all your (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) The car will be staying Desert Gold and Sand Dune Beige. I will NEVER Christine this car although I'm sure Chris would do a fine job on her. She's way too nice as is. Thanks for the recommendation guys and best wishes to you on your new endeavor Chris!
I still remember you for helping me find out what was wrong with my 69 Fury's 318...when the motor swallowed all the contents of the radiator a few years back. You told me to look at the timing chain cover. BINGO. That was it and after replacing it...she's been running great ever since. Thanks once again for that Chris! You are da man (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

That's exactly what I thought you were doing too Leaburn. Unfortunately, the rusty one now has the focus of this thread (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) Mine appears to have had somewhat better care over the last 53 years...Eh?
