Title: New Power Antenna needed.
Post by: attkrlufy on March 15, 2010, 03:41:34 PM
Could ChryCo. have made the 1979 R-body power antenna any harder to get to?  3 hrs of removing the passenger side fender to take out a part that came out in 2 minutes?  Are you kidding me???!!!  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)

The point is, I need a new power antenna unit - the whole thing, mast and motor.  I don't want to deal with modding something to fit and I don't want to solder wires together.

Does anyone make a factory-spec, plug-n-play power antenna assembly for this model car?  All the aftermarket units I've found don't fit and/or don't have the factory harness.  Or maybe there's a better place for this part than eBay, 'cause it wasn't much help.  There's one guy in Michigan who has a 25 year old unit here:

But he doesn't know if it works, he will not test it, and he will NOT come off his "no refunds" policy (I asked).  If it arrives and it's broken - well, I'm out $75.

So I'd rather not play Russian roulette w/ $75.  I don't care if I pay $100 - I want to know the thing WORKS.  I simply don't have time to rebuild a bad unit.

Any ideas?

I would spend the extra time making a new universal one work.
At least you KNOW it will work.
With a little testing, you can figure out which wire does what and match them up.

I agree about the antenna being a 1/2 day job.  UNBELIEVABLY inaccesable.  Well, anyway, I was lucky to find an almost new OEM.  I grabbed it knowing I'd never ever see another.  Seriously?  Had I not found it, I was going to replace it with a non-power universal antenna.  It's a lot easier....

Ya I'd just ditch the power and stick in a fixed mast.

I would in a heartbeat if I had guaranteed storage, but I have to consider somewhere down the line that I'll be back to keeping the car outside with a cover on it when it's not being driven.  Fixed mast antennas make getting that cover on and off a real chore.  Jeez I wish I had my own garage.

Maybe I'll try Murray Park at Cbodies.com.  I can't believe these things are so hard to come by.  Didn't all mopars w/ power antennas from the 70s and 80s use the same unit?  Shouldn't there be, like, a million of them floating around by now? (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)

If they're like the power windows in R bodies, they are.

All Factory non-power masts as well as aftermarket will unscrew from the antenna bases.

We just screw them on finger-tight & when we want to put a cover on just unscrew & lay it on the pass-side floor next to the seat.

Too easy.
