Title: Fixin' Fusey Floors
Post by: firedome on March 11, 2010, 11:20:02 AM

Using a rust free  piece of '73 Chrysler trunk floor (thanks
to  Chris in AZ)... I cut out the 3 rusted areas of the F
III  trunk floor with the air body saw (Harbor Freight
special),  then cut the patches out of Chris' piece with a metal
cutting band saw ('50s Craftsman picked up last fall on Craigslist) and
using Eastwood panel  clamps (work great!) tacked them in... next
will come seam welding via gas torch for smooth and narrow welds, does
better thn my Lincoln Mig...  I need a Miller Synchromax 200 TIG (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/attachments/58/f3-5.JPG)

That's a nice job, but why not cut and weld the whole rusty area?
I will never have the chance to grab original sheet of metals, we had to make clones to match the originals!

I wanted to keep as much of the original floor as possible, and those
areas were solid. Also the area between the 2 bigger patches is spot
welded to a U channel under the floor and is double thick in the flange
areas. The silver POR seems to fill in little pits better than the
other flavors, I've found...

any pics do not judge the real condition of the sheet metal, we did exactly the same on the Imperial and only cut what necessary to keep the originals.
we are using a special coat that turns surface rust into another material that can be over painted

Ya, I've used rust conveter before too, but it didn't hold up so well
for me, POR 15 seems just about indestructable, I used it on my Nova
floor undersides 2 yrs ago, and painted it flat black over the silver
so it looks like undercoat - still looks like new. POR is expensive,
but good, if you follow the directions exactly...

The rust converter will turn rust into dark colored oxide that cannot be easily removed, only 1 liter (0.26 Gallons) was 40$ , I liked the stuff and could not find better.

You can order POR by mail directly from their website... that's how I
get it. Just Google POR-15. They don't sell it in any stores as far as
I know.

thanks man If I only knew about it before you packed the box (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
will only use it on the floor panel so don't need much of it...
