Hi Guys! Thanks for the invite and setting up my account!

I am down to two Mopars right now but at one point I had quite a few A and B body cars ranging from 1970 up to 1977. My favorites were 340 4 speed Darts and Valiants. I had a few Dusters that were a lot of fun also.

Most people know lots about hotroding the V8s already but how many of you guys built up a slant six? Let me know if any of you are interested and I will pass on some of the things I have done to them to make them perform better.

Welcome Stew....... ever punch larger valves, get the compression up to 10:1 on 87 octane? Slant sixes are very nice engines, not normally found in the C bodies, but that's OK, I don't have a C body, either.

After I put on just over 200,000 miles I rebuilt my slant six with all the tricks I could think of. Larger valves with a 3 angle grind. Milled .080" off of the head to bring the compression up. 340 double valve springs with a Direct Connection slant six race cam. .040" over bore helped a bit also. I did some porting and polishing on the head. I did ots more little things to make it run better. It makes around 200 streetable hp and is a lot of fun to drive.

The engineers left a lot on the table with the slant six. For instance I could have milled off .120" when I machined the heads. This would have brought the compression up too high for street use though. I settled on around 10.25 to 1 with my combination. Bumping up the compression ratio, changing the cam and valve springs made this little engine snap off idle. You just touch the pedal and she wants to rip.

I had always thought that my points were floating and it was limiting the rpm of the engine. It was not the points, it was the weak valve springs limiting rpms. My new combination would spin easily and safely to 6000 rpm. It made the coolest rapping sound at certain rpms as you accelerated or decelerated.

Hey Dave, How is the truck running? When are you installing your new parts?

the best hop up procedure for a slant six requires one tool.....

I can see you think the Slant 6 is a waste of time.

Suppose I told you I have seen slantys beat 440's.  Yup.  And with minimal care, they will even outlast a 318

Oh I know they can be powerful (I also own one) but for the amount of $$$ and time it takes to hop one up, one can swap in a V8 (or Maggy-num V6 like I want to do) and get cheap power. Heck the Maggy 6 is going to double my Valiant's HP in stock form! (90+ to 180hp plus I get EFI too)

Ya but anyone can do that... much more fun to make a Hyper-Slanty... can you say Twin Turbo?!!

Roger, your opinion doesn't count because, like me, you like orphan cars (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

Slant six racing gets the same or less coverage and following than do the Studebakers, Packards, Hudsons....etc. I saw firsthand how popular Crosleys were among the populace..... /6 cars get similar respect

The A body cars were originally designed with the slant six in mind. The lighter engine works better than a heavier engine in many types of racing. When you double the car's hp and torque they will walk on a 340 car. The hemi version of the slant six was the best combination they ever made...well over 300 hp! Too bad they did not release them in North America!
