Title: 68 fury fastop stickshift V8 UPDATES 7-26-10
Post by: Stan Paralikis on November 30, 2009, 10:00:18 AM
Forget the part where he hokied it up with the side exhaust.  The car will worth the parts.  Plus, the trunk is dry.  They're never dry on these cars...

Shad App You. . .You got me into this. . . . . (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

I have asked for additional pictures of the rear rails and floors.  It's probably ready to launch the rear spring shackles which is why he is REALLY selling it.  Me?  I just get a sheet of 20 Gauge steel and make new.

I know where there is a rust free clip I can get

The pics tell me the rear 1/4's are soft.
IMO,there is more rust problems taen the seller is saying.
The tape over  the top of rear window can be a can of rust worms.
Good parts car.....

Got the report back. . . .

The front sub is rotted. . .  I have one.
The floors are good, but the trunk is toast
The rear rails around the spring shackles are just about done and ready to pop.
However, The interior was dry, it ran good, even with the double pumper on there, it drove nice, and it is pretty straight.

The front fenders behind the wheels are going. . . But the clip has to come off anyway.

The guy that looked at it has a front subframe for it already.  I'm thinking I may put my Magnum 5.2 into it and just buy a bell for the 4 speed and make her dance.

The only bidder on the car retraced his bid too.  I's thinking of offering him 1000 for it.  I can put the side pipe exhaust on the 50.  That's 500 alone.  LOL

Stanley. . .I'm gonna kick your ass next time I see you

Listen..........

It's a '68.
It's a fast top.
It's blue, not green.
It's a manual tranny.  All you need is the hump.
It's a small block K-frame..

It would take 3X the money to convert another car...
A 1000 bucks is cheap considering the aggrevation you'd have to go through, otherwise.
PLUS, do you really,  REALLY, think another car, let alone a better one, is out there like this?

I blew the only opportunity I'll ever have of scoring that one-in-a-gazillion '69 2 dr. post w/manual trannny that I have been searching forever for.  Amato sold it. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif)
Don't make the same mistake.

Yeah Yeah Yeah

I told him I'd wait out the auction.  There are far better condition cars out there for less.  There's one in Mass for 650, but I can tell and another that has a reserve.

Now I have to negotiate with the guy.  It's a $500 car really

Have to scrounge up another 360 somewhere.  Chances of me coming up with a brand new Magnum for $386 with shipping are nill.

Find a figure that you would be crazy NOT to buy it at and that's what you will settle not a penny more for.
That way, if you get it, you'll feel you stole it and if you don't get it you'll have no guilt.
Works for me.

I truely believe with some crafty negotiation, he'll go as low as a grand which I would say is a good buy for you.
My opinion only.  It's free.  You get what you pay for.
Title: 68 fury fastop stickshift V8 UPDATES 7-26-10
Post by: Steve on December 10, 2009, 05:58:15 AM
Well I am going to give it a whirl at 800.  If he doesn't take it. . . . Oh Well!  I didn't need it then.

The guy from Drydock who looked at it for me siad he probably wouldn't take 800 for it.  He is trying to break even.

Not as much work on this as the VOAB needed. . .  At least I don't need to put whole 1/4s on it.

I tlooks like I can take the whole thing for 900.  What do you think?

ur friend that came and looked at the car for you said that if he knows you you will pull the engine and put a big block in it,so i will make u this offer i will pull the engine and keep the side pipe and sell the rest of the car for 700 its gota b worth that cuz two guys are asking me if i will part the car out one offered me 600 for all the chrome trim and the other offered 300 for the pedal assembly thats all the beter i can do.Derek

Yep..breaking even is what he wants to do
300 is market value for the pedals.
Chrome must be nice if he was actually offered 600.
So,yeah go for it.What you do not keep can alwys be sold since the 68 Fury is a popular model still.

Well boys and girls, it's all set.  I'm going out Friday to get the car.    (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

I had someone go with me to get the trailer out of the muck.  It took two trucks to get me out.  Actually it took one, then we both got stuck so I called in a third, a dually which had a 16,000 winch on the front with 200 feet of cable. Yeah sure!  Great candidate for a 440 4 speed.. . . . .

Don't worry.  Us engineers can figure out how long it will take to break in half.  I can rig it to blow at 3,000 miles.

I have a neat little Magnum planned for this.  The one in Polaraco is going into this.  Since I will have an extra harness. . . . .   A little head porting and a stronger cam. . .  It already runs almost like a 5.9. . . .

Skinny little thing will fool the best of them.  OR!  I may put that 360 I got from Weeburn in this and throw the magnum heads on it.  Take that 318 and put that into the 550.  That's actually a better idea because I would have to buy 2 torque converters.  The other way, I just need to balance the flywheel.

Well. . .It's Back!

The Frame swap begins.  I'll be posting some pictures of the car before I start to rip it apart tomorrow.

Now that I had some time to look over the car, most of the work is in the trunk.  Surprisingly, the car was well taken care of.  The lower pushings have been done, the uppers were too, but the drivers side bushing tunnel is blowing out.

Looks like the trunk is the worst of the damage.  I see some flaking rust in the rear rail, but can't tell if it from the trunk floor or the rail itself.  The floors are perfect, and I saved the floors from the VOAB JIC.  I saved the rear rails and may clip in the rails from behind the wheel back.

I'll try to get the pics up later tonight.  I searched for this thread and wanted to bring it up.

I am up in the air about the brakes.  I have Snotty's 11" brakes on the new frame already installed.  But I do have a set of 73 Spindles here too.  Either way I have to go with 15" wheels.

Yes it will be.  I am looking into building a 401 stroker for this and I have the 4 speed already.  Just need a shifter.

I am also looking at putting a 6 pack on the 401.  NOW THAT will be unusual and ought to be a snorter.

I drove it around the neighbor hood yesterday without an exhaust.  The clutch is a bit noisey when the pedal is completely depressed, but it looks like a new clutch weas installed.  Car handled very well, brakes are excellent, but I am still going to upgrade the fronts, probably to Snotty's 12 X 3, vs. the 11 X 2 drums.  Too lazy to change the spindles.  LOL.

Since I took the picture of the frame, I have installed the brake lines

Update

The weather has been working against me. I have a total of three weeks to get this all apart and back toether.  Gonna be tight!

The front is off, tomorrw I'll pull the engine and trans.  Then I will struggle with dropping the old frame.  Once that is out, I'll be able to do some detailing underneith with rust prevention and painting.  As you saw above, the new frame is ready to go back in.  Once that's in, dropping the engine in will be a snap and  the rest is pretty easy.

Looks like I got this just in time.  The left front fender is junk as the inner fender.  I saved the fender from the 67 as I did the inners.  The Right front needs a small spot rebuilt and a bunch of rust converter.  The outer half of the inner is rotted around the bolts connecting it to the fender.  I have the left front inner ready for painting and am in the process of prepping the the right  inner.

The floors are solid, except for one small place where the forward seat bolt comes through in the drivers side.  The cross brace is rotted too, but I still have the floors from the vert.  The drivers side is the worst, always.  But this will be a quick save.  The pressure washer shows me right away where the trouble spots are.

I'm using this new rust converter from Eastwood.  The also have spray cans of a new inner frame sealer.  It converts the rust and seals it with a permanent coating.  I tested it in a small external spot. . .That stuff is tough!

I'll get some shots of it soon. . .   In the mean time, I think I'll be pulling the engine in the rain

You can't beat POR15 imo, butyou have to do the prep exactly like they
say. I haven't had good luck with converters, but Eastwood tends to vet
their stuff before selling it, so may be good.

The floor pockets are in great shape, but the forward perches are fotting in the middle.  The shims blew out and damaged the perches by colapsing them.   I can fix it pretty quick though.  Stronger than new.

This frame has a rebuilt steering box and Idler, so I'll reuse them on the new frame.

I NEED A SMALL BLOCK THROTTLE CABLE FOR THE 68.  Helps if you disconnect it when pulling the engine.  nybody have one?  I need it right away.

Going to detail the firewall before I put the frame in.

Yeah, I've heard of them, but I have the other frame ready to go and it didn't cost me anything.   I had already rebuilt that frame, with everything but the steering box and idler.  Low and behold, this frame has more good parts.  It even has a good set of ball joints.

Besides, would you put money into that frame?

Steel Reserve sounds like a good investment at this point! - you sure
get into some mega-projects Steve, but this one may be worth it.
67/68 and 70/71 are the best of the C body Furys imho.  That will
be one unique drop top... so, was a 4 spd even available in 70/71
Fury?  I'd think in a Sport Fury anyhow....

Hell, if the scrap guy shows up and get's this old frame out of my way tomorrow, the firewall will be painted, the frame will be back in, and she'll be back on the ground again by Sunday afternoon.  Talkin about flyin'!

I just finished making all the pieces  to repair the perches and new body shims.  I have about 30 minutes with the welder and under she'll go.  But I think I'll finish the frame with the new steering box and weld on the Pivot point for the clutch while I wait for the paint to dry.

My buddy Pete is coming monday evening to help me stuff the motor back in.  I am hoping to have it running again in 2 weeks.  Then it's outa here and a big clean up

I still have to drop the front and take out a layer of shims to get the steering box lined up.  Other than that, I'll be putting the engine and trans back in Monday.  Tomorrow I will be finishing up the frame bolts and connecting the front brakes.

you are saying that the quarter panels on a 67 are the same as 68 I am talking around the rear wheel opening, if that is true they are not the same and to prove it try putting a 68 fender skirt on a 67 the 68 has a body line that the 67 does not ( I know I tried it and had to have the body line taken out of the 68 to match the 67 ) we are talking about a fury 2 door right.

I was going to black it out after I had it all shimmed and straight.  The bolt threads need to be painted.   It won't be done this year. . .I'm fixing the front fenders, installing the shifter and away she goes for the winter.  Time for the 62 POLARACO2010-07-30 23:14:07

This sucker kicked my butt.  I'm going to have to make a shifter hump for this.  I need to make more room for the bracket and the hole is way too big for the boot.  Bad angle too.  The action is nice and smooth so I am pleased.  I should have lubed the pivots and forgot.  I aint going in there again. . . (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

But!  Progress has been made.  The fenders are salvaged and reconstructed on the insides.  They are all treated on the inside and sealed for storage.  The fenders are just mounted and not set as they will come off again.  orry for the blurry pic.  The sun throws off the focus on the camera, or I was shakey.  LOL

Yeah  I know.  But I kind of like the idea of the boot being straight up.

I had to cut it that big and bend the floor in placesPOLARACO2010-08-07 19:55:23
