Title: EVAP canister hoses??
Post by: firedome on November 10, 2009, 03:34:09 AM
Got my new tank in, but there is a difference in the hoses that go to
the "junction box" that's mounted in the car just forward and above the
tank... the one that came with the tank has somewhat different
fittings, configuration, and hose diameters than the one that is on the
car.  The new tank was for a '73
Imp, but it itself is the same. And Spectra makes only one tank for all
69 to 73 C Bodies.  Will get some pics today to better illustrate
what I mean...

use what you need and plug what you don't need.

But what ever you do, make sure you keep the separator working.  You'll have fumes all over the place.

Problem is, other that the feed from the tank to FF and FP, I don't know what I need! I need to get a FSM for this thing!

There were two different tanks for cars made in California and for those not.  The Cal. specific ones had 5 hoses - one for the fuel itself.  Others had two vent hoses.  The Tech. Manuals illustrated both.

Both tanks have a feed hose and sender wire in the center of the
circular sender unit, and 4 vent hoses that go to the "junction box,
Getting pics now...

Mine has no evap canister,at least I can't find one... it has a return
line that goes from the breather can on the pass. side valve cover back
to the jucntion box apparenty. There's  also a feed line as
mentioned before. Next 3 posts will show pics.

junction box on 71 F3 - you can see the ends of 2 metal lines from
engine compartment - one in center is feed from tank, one on L side is
return from breather on valve cover. Others are the 4 lines from tank
(can't quite see the one on R) and one of them is larger diameter than
others on the F3, not so on the Imp one. I think the breather one goes
to the connector on the far L that faces L. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/attachments/58/IMAGE014H.JPG)

Both tanks look identical, like this, except one fitting on the old one
shown here, 2nd from left, is of a different diameter than the other 3
that go to the junction box for some reason... on the 73 Imp tanks and
junction box all 4 are the smaller diameter... ? (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/attachments/58/IMAGE009H1.JPG)

First of all it's a vapor separator.  It was designed to eliminate fumes which are considered polutants.  In those days, it sucked it back into the engine where it was consumed somehow.  I forget how it worked now.  It's almost the same as the Polara was.  (Pic Above)  My 71F3 (A former internet name I used) had a similar setup.

You can slip the larger lines on the tank nipples and clamp them.  Or, force some 1/4 onto the separator and just slide the on the tank.  I like the later.

It looks like a pile of spagetti, but all those fitting go to the separator like the drawing shows above.  I don't think these tanks have the tubing inside like the factory tanks did. . .  I had a pile of problems and it caused me to create a much larger separator.  But I'm working with EFI too.  The tank would pressureize and dump fuel back into the canister where the engine sucked up raw fuel.  This little pupy works perfect.

So, I'm curious, ( a trait that's gotten me into a pickle more than
once...)  but anyhow, so why do they need so many hoses to go from
the tank to the separator? Wouldn't one big one do the same thing? And
what's going on inside the tank?

Look at my picture.  There's supposed to be a network of tubing in the tank to separate the fumes from the liquid.  I have to guess they are allowing for different angles as the car moves around.  Frankly, I don't know!  I do know, with my new system, one vent line was not enough.  The factory separator was not enough, I didn't get it all separated until I made my own separator.  That sucker will handle 3 quarts!

The separator on the '71 is about 2x the size of the '73 Imp one for some reason!

Looks like yours was made from an old empty enamel reducer can or some
such... clever.  I think I do remember that post from a few years
back on Polaraco's fuel injection. ... I should Git 'er Done today...
but now I gotta cough up 250 for a radiator recore!!
