Title: stock wheel & tire upgrade for 71 F3
Post by: firedome on October 27, 2009, 06:50:09 AM
Like to put 225/70/15 tires on the F3, it has 215s on the F and 205s on
the R now... the original tire spec was FR75-15, which is either 195 or
205?  I think the stock wheels may be 5 or 5.5", probably too
narrow for 225s.  I'm not looking for high performance, just an
upgrqade in size for regular All Season tires like Goodyear Integrity
or some such - should I upgrade to larger size Mopar stock steel wheels
(I want to run the Fury wheelcovers I have for a stock look) ??

Also any recommendation for cheap but decent All-Season
tires?  Consumer Reports just did a big tire test and the Kumho
Solus KR21 did well at a low price, but I'd like a US (in name at
least, if not US owned)  tire on my Plymmie... General Altimax,
Dayton Quadra and Cooper Touring and LifeLiner rated sort of mid
pack.  Firestone FR710 rated last. They only tested a limited
number of tires though.

Grab a set of 15X7 plain steel wheels off a Diplomat or 5TH Ave.Still plenty in boneyards and be had cheap.
You can run a 2357515,2357015 or 2257515 tire and retain the factory wheel covers.
Cop car rims(painted black,or white,or body color) and cheesgrater dog dishes will look awesome on the F3.
Look like an ex-cop.
BTW I DO have a 9ft. stainless whip to mount on the right corner of the rear bumper,eh?? LOL
Check out the Kelly line of tires.Owned and manufactured by Goodyear.Good pricing and tread pattern that works well on a big Fusey.
I have the 23570R15 Navigator Gold on the Barge and they ride very nice, quiet (cant hear any tire noise over the 440 with TTi system anyways) they are available in 2257015,too.

Dang!  - so Dippys and 5ths used 7" wide 15" wheels??!!  I'll
look for a set!  Seems like a wide wheel for what was essentially
a gussied up Volare. And I will scope out Kelly Navigators too.  I
did know Kelly was part of Goodyear since forever, they used to have a
tire plant in MD way back in the '50 and '60s when I lived there.
Thanks for the info!

Yup.
All 5THs and Dippys ran 15X7's.Don't know why since the factory sized 2057515 were a old woman to bead--sometimes a bead blaster was needed to pop them on the rims.
But the cop M body cars ran 2257015 and filled the wheelwells better.

A few years back those 15x7 steel wheels were pulling a premium here.  I sold a set before I pulled them off of the truck ten years back - $25.00 each.  I would not think they are that cheap today.

Even so, Cordobas often had the 15x7s too.  That's where mine came from.

And I want to use the stock wheel covers anyhow...

I'm going to the U-Pull-It today - called and they sell any steel wheel
for $18ea... prices are low around here. I go there almost weekly, they
have amazing w/e specials:  good motors for $99 and trannies for
$59. Bumpers and hoods $15.  Also here I paid $40 to get my '58
gas tank boiled out, people in other areas pay as much as $200 +.
I love Eddie's Radiator SHop!

I wanted to find a set of those for my Cordoba when I had it.  Those "turbines" are made from rubber and deteriorate badly.  I could never find a good set.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.  People said the same about Rally Wheels on my New Yorker.  I thought they looked great.

Take a tape measure.  I bought a "15x7" from a yard once and had a problem keeping the hubcap on.  Turned out it was a 15x6.5.
