Title: Brake Light Switch
Post by: Mike on May 25, 2009, 09:29:20 AM
Yesterday P was trying to remove the brake light switch out of my '68 Fury and he couldn't seem to get it out (I'm too big to fit under there (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif))  He said it didn't seem like there was a bolt holding it in.  If anybody has any feedback or advice for removing it, please let me/P know.

It's there. . .  I know it is.  My 67 has it too

When can you two get up here with that?

Well it's not inspected so I'm not sure if I wanna chance driving it up there or not yet.  I'd like to get this switch taken care of so I at least have brake lights if I do decide to take the trip up.  I'm free pretty much any Sunday (since I know that is the day you prefer to do work) I just have to see when P is free.

You and P come, bring tiny if you want, but have P follow you.  You'll go home with all the lights working.

If you get stopped, tell the cop you are on your way to get it fixed for inspection.  Chances are they won't bother you.  Use hand signals to you don't get B-U-I-C-K imprinted in your bumper (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

You'll be fine.  It's hard to bring the tool box to the job.

Bring your old carbs with you too.  I need the parts

The Switch sits in a bracket, But there is no bolt or nut holding it in. Looks like it just slides into the hole. The problem is, that the brake pedal is in the way and I don't know how to slide it out without moving a whole mess of stuff.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I finally got around to looking under the dash myself at the switch...I see it is held in there with a clip, but I don't have the slightest idea on how to pop the clip out, so I can slide the switch out of the bracket.  Any insight would be appreciated.

Ey Yi Yi Yi

That bracket is held in with a 1/4 bolt on the side of the column/brake bracket.

Doesn't the new one have a bracket on it?

What he said,  take the bolt out for the whole bracket & swap the switch out with it all out of the car.    The switches don't come with a new bracket,  you have to push the switch out of the bracket ( releasing the clip ) & slide the new one into the bracket.

When you re-install the bracket notice that it'll slide back & forth a bit.    You slide the bracket up till the switch is OPEN against the brake pedal arm.   That's how you adjust the brake switch so it goes off when the pedal is retracted.

Nothing to it.  2 wires & bolt.

I just bought one for the 67 Vert that had the bracket on it.  Same switch.  I got a Standard.  Maybe the NAPA doesn't have the bracket?
