Title: Best coolant hoses/clamps?
Post by: attkrlufy on May 13, 2009, 07:50:35 AM

There seems to be a lot of useless self-promotion online about the "best" type of coolant hoses and so I thought I'd check in with you guys.

I'm replacing all the coolant hoses (who knows how old they are), pulling the radiator, and replacing the thermostat this weekend (360 V8) and I'd like to know what type of hoses to put back.  What's the "best" kind of hose to use?

By "best" I mean: longevity and strength.  I don't care if they look stock or not.  I just want them to work dependably and be the most durable - meaning less prone to leaks and 'splosions.

Also, while I'm on the subject, do the clamps matter?  There seem to be two kinds 1) Spring-tension clamps and 2) screw-adjustable clamps.  And those screw-type seem to come in many varieties:  the clamp has "teeth" built in, clamp has no "teeth" - the screw is on the outside, clamp has "teeth" but they don't contact the hose, etc. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley29.gif)

Any thoughts on the matter?

Race clamps, HD clamps, band clamps, spring clamps..... I would never spend the extra time, effort, and money hunting down those clamps, unless I had a 488" blown stroker that I beat unmercifully on the stip and street.  I have NEVER had a failure on the plain old SS hose clamps from the auto store.  That's thirty-five years and counting.....

I agree with Stan - I like those clamps he illustrated.  I do not like the factory clamps and replace them if I have a car with them on.

As for hoses, just go to your local shop and ask for hoses for your car.  Gates are good.  Since your car is not modified (different motor) there should be no problem in getting the correct ones.

I agree with those guys, Gates an Goodyear hoses are as good as it
gets, and stainless clamps as illustrated can't be beat. The OEM wire
type clamps used on some ferrin cars just plain suck.

If I disagreed. . I'd be lynched. . .   But I concur with the other opinions

Boy those old squeeze clamps are a major pain in the drain......I like the screw clamps much better.....just make sure you aim the screw where you can get to it (like on the Hurst fuel line, eh Snotty?)

I guess nothing beats a bit of face-time in helping you make up your mind...

....now that all the hoses are out, I am DEFINITELY going with screw-clamps in the future.  Those spring clamps were a real b%$#@ to get out (especially the two by the firewall)

Those special pliers you mention, BTW, aren't worth a damn, either.  I bought a pair and - twice - the retaining clips that hold the clip socket in place fell out.  Once I found it, the other time...well...I'm just glad Sears has a liberal return policy on Craftsman tools.

Maybe if I had a 1960 Chrysler 300 F with say, 1500 miles on it I might deal with the factory spring clamps but other than that, forgeddaboutit!!!!!
