Title: Noob here. First Mopar, going good so far...
Post by: zerolux on April 16, 2009, 06:05:41 PM
Hey guys, been digging thru the forum and wanted to drop in and say hi.  I just picked up a 74 Newport (400) and have been searching for a good forum to get info, parts leads, ect.  so far, i've found tons of suppliers and great info.

this is my first mopar.  to be honest, it's my first non VW since i started driving 13+ years ago.  i had been searching for a creampuff for under $1500 and found this beauty and had to get it.  i'm the 2nd owner, not to sure on actual mileage (speedos have been swapped a few times) but the condition and records included with the car show it was well maintained and it has been a great car so far, starts everytime, a/c works great.  i plan to keep it pretty much original with maybe some suspension work to get lower.

any info or suggestions for other places/forums to check out would be great.

on with the pics...

thanks man.  i appreciate the warm welcome.

i did have a few questions that you guys might be able to help me with.  just to preface, i've been working on cars as log as i've been driving them and consider myself to be a decent shadetree wrench so i'm not afraid to tackle most duties (unless i can't find or afford the tool needed lol).

first, any tips or info on tuning the carb?  it's the holley 2bbl 2245.  it seems to be loading up a bit (slight hesitaion at stoplights after idleing).  it also wants to stall when the a/c is on.  otherwise, it starts and runs fine.  i'm sure i could get in there figure it out but i wanted to do the proper research before even touching it.  to be honest, the last carb i tuned was over 10 years ago and was attached to a 1600 beetle.

2nd, as far as PS and rear-end fluids, do they require and weird-ass, mopar specific juices?  this might sound retarded to some but coming from german cars, you might understand my apprehention.  just want to be sure.

Welcome Zerolux...Glad to have you with us. You should post your questions in the appropriate section...The carb question under tech engine and the rear end- under tech drive train. You'll get much more help on them that way...To let you know my 2 cents...carb probably just needs a tear down, clean up and rebuild...hesitation after idle probably a worn out accelerator pump...but maybe even as little as a few adjustments?? And as far as I know, the rear end just uses 80-90 w gear oil...Post over in the appropriate areas though and get evrybody's opinion....Welcome...You've found a great bunch of Mopar freaks. Stan (Commando1) will love that you are here...and he 'll probably wet himself when he sees your car. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif) Very nice ride! Did you say you are in FLA? Uh oh..That's where he is too...

Welcome Welcome Welcome, Bob

2bbl Holleys on 400's (and 360's of the same era) were always problematic.
Every one that I had was junk.
If there is any play in the throttle shaft,it is worn out.
As for the stumble, the acceleration pump may be dried out.Try bending the rod a little to help shoot gas in a little sooner as the lever goes down.
In the past, most who had the 2bbl holley converted to a 4bbl intake and carb and actually increased gas mileage. (4bbl carbs have smaller primaries).
Hope this helps

WelcomE !  If I'n not mistaken, the grill on it is later than '74.
I'm looking at a factory pic and it is a somewhat lower grille, no
chrome band across the top, no stand up hood ornament, the CHRYSLER
letters are on the hood front on a painted area, not on the chrome
grille... it is quite different.  Even the '75 didn't have that
wide chrome band at the top... interestingly, your grille is that of a
'76 or later Newport... and a more accurate name for these cars would
be Neoclassic, the R-body is a far more Formal design. Many of the
design cues on the '74-78 cars harken back to the 30s Classic era:
stand up hood ornaments,  opera windows, pontoon fenders etc.

Enjoy your car, it was a good buy at 1500!

Also - I wonder why the engine is red? They were always blue-aqua color after around 69 or 70.

Funny fluids? No, you use regular lubricants in these cars... I know
VWs require all kinds of special oil and tranny oils etc. Silly Krauts.

So was the grille mystery solved? The pics confirm my suspicion.

Welcome!!!! Great obsevation on the red engine paint guys! Either it is a different engine,or,whoever rebuilt it liked the red a little more than Chrysler blue! Red was offered 67-69' in the LA engines. The only fluid additive in the rear end would be if it had a "Sure-grip" diff. The additive can be found at any Chrysler dealership! Awesome ride you found, for the price you paid!!!!
