Title: Caliber question

Has anyone had any experience with continuously variable transmission?  How about the 1.8 motor? My daughter is contemplating getting a new Caliber, but wants an automatic. Looking for any comments. Thanks.

I've read on other forums that Nissan supplies that powertrain to Dodge, and that other than getting used to the "feel" of the CVT, it works fine.

It does take some getting used to.
I have read in other forums that most prefer the Neon it replaced.
Some suggested the Sebring/Avenger over the Caliber.

After over 40 years of automatics, us oldsters are really going ot have some cultur shock.
 
It is different, but not that bad.   I've heard they are pretty reliable.  There was a hicup in the beginning, but it was computer stuff.  A new flash and it was fixed.
 
She should be good to go

Amen Brother!  If you want to drive a car that whines out in high RPM, get one!  I'd pass; I don't see the advantages to merit one, and they've been trying to get these on the road for 20 years.

An Avenger RT or the Sebring Limited 3.5 both have the 3.5 V-6 with a 6-speed auto - nice set-up!

DAF in Holland has had CVTs since the 60s, they got bought out by Volvo
yeears ago, the basic principle is ingenious and it works well, but I,
too, find the constant high rpm drone disconcerting... I like to hear
the engine rpms change with shifts and road speed.

IIRC, I read in some magazine the CVT will  be  the the wave of the furure.  Can't remember whivh mag, though.

My family ownes one of each body style
me I got my late fathers Patriot(payment book and all) 2.4 VVT world engine, offroad package, hill desent assist, ESP ABS-love it is a little wierd when you mash the loud pedal and the thing goes straight to 6000RPM and stays there until you get to the speed you want. MPG for mine is 17 to 19 in heavy city driving-21MPG on the highway(it is lower do to the lower gearing from the offroad package)
My sister has the 4X4 Compass has the 2.4 VVT world engine an very nice blue color-I just do not like the look of the Compass-looks too girlly-Sis like it gets great MPG
My mom has the FWD Caliber-2.0 VVT world engine-she is getting 100 miles to 1/4 tank-has good power from less HP-more than my mom will ever need. She has never complained about the trans or how it shifts(or the lack there of) Go a head and tell her to buy it-will have miles of trouble free driving.

I test drove one a few months ago and have to say it's....different.  I can't stand how the Caliber or Avenger's handle...seems to me they need a stiffer sway bar because there is an awful lot of body roll.  Not that my Grand Voyager is any better or anything. :-P
