Title: Replace Ignition Coil?

Just out of curiosity - when I scrap the leanburn in my car and replace it w/ a Mopar electronic ignition, should I replace the ignition coil, too?

It's 30 years old but seems to work fine.  Still....I was thinking that if I'm going to all the trouble of converting the car's ignition, shouldn't I take advantage of the opportunity and put in a new coil?  I don't know much about them - I don't know if they work perfectly until they break, or if their effectiveness slowly diminishes over time.

What do you think?  Does it look reputable?  These can't be that hard to install.  It looks pretty much plug 'n play.

It can't hurt.  You have a good point.
 
I may have a brand new Mopar box available for you real soon.  It's got maybe an hour on it.

I use Accel Super Stock coils.
Cheap
Reliable
Packs a punch.
Can be painted to look "stock".
Every time I do a Pertronix,or Mopar conversion,I always change the coil.

I didn't when I switched out the points set-up to the MP Electronic Ignition stuff in my '65 Valiant I had in the mid 1990's or in Chaz.  Wasn't a problem then or now.

One of my instructors, who was VERY familiar with Chrysler stuff due to prepping young skulls of mush for the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest (back when it was run by Plymouth and then later when Ford took over in the early 1990's) told me that the engineers for Chrysler incorporated the stock coil used in points systems into the electronic systems when they were introduced in 1972, since the coil design did provide adequate spark.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Coils aren't "wear items", but, Leaburn and Steve aren't giving out bad advice, either.

You pays your money and you takes your chances.  If it works now, I would use it.

Coils can sometime display flukey discontinuity when hot, but generally
are "go" or "no go". They are basically just a transformer.

If there are any signs of oil leaking from the coil-replace it.

Okay.  Good to know.  As far as I'm aware, the coil works perfectly and isn't leaking.

I think I'll leave it for now.  Thanks, guys.

If it's any constelation, we have expanded the years on the main site from 1950 to 1983 now.  So you're covered.
 
Coils can get flakey when they get hot yes.  And they are oil packed back then so they could leak.  If there is nothing wrong now. . .let 'er rip

I swapped the leanburn for a MP set-up on the '79 Cordoba I had.  I used the original coil and had no problems, just like Moe.
 
If your State requires Smog Check, and must have original equipment, don't toss the leanburn!  You can swap it back in about an hour for the check.  I even swapped air cleaners.  I used a dual-snorkle with the MP, but kept the original AC with the ECM for the Smag Checks.

Right now my area doesn't.  I did, however, grow up in an area that required a smog-check - but I don't know if the equipment had to be ORIGINAL, or if it just had to "pass" the test, you know?

My understanding of mopars of this era is if you have a properly tuned engine, and don't scrap the PCV and EGR, the car should pass the smog-test, no problem.

Sorry Steve, but I think that's bad advice.
 
It depends on the State.  My Cordoba ran very clean, but failed a Smog Check because it was missing the aluminum heat tube from the mainfold to the air cleaner.
 
What I would sugest is to check with your local and State requirements and follow those rules.  If it must be "factory" as it is in California, keep all of your parts that you replace.  Take pictures of the difference if you can't remember, and simply put them on again for the check.
