On the 5th Ave.
Can I sneak the heads off this 318 with the exhaust manifolds still bolted to the Y Pipe?
 
I know it's not the most ideal way of doing this. . .  I will have enough trouble with the emission tubes.  I don't want to be messing with the exhaust manifolds if I don't have too.  This car is so hard to work on when it's on the ground
 
I've never tried it before.
 
As you know, it will be very hard to cut the bolts with the hot wrench.  The Y Pipe bolts are not a good straight shot for the impact wrench.  I have to do this myself too, that makes it harder.

I learned from that '89 we gutted.
Much easier to leave the Y pipe connected to the heads,and remove the logs from the heads,IMHO.
Let the Y pipe drop so you can still reach the head bolts.
In the past,most had the divertor holes in the logs plugged.Much quieter running operation and no "flutter" noise coming up through the carb.Smog police are not going to look there anyways--you cant see it fom looking under the hood.
Everything is so tight in the engine bay it is easier to yank out the whole darn thing.
Steve,you need a shop with a hoist.Make life much easier.
But that's a different topic.

I forgot about the head bolts.  Too cold to be crawling under there in the ice.

Did they change much from 85-89?  Because I pulled the heads from an 85 last summer without doing anything to the y pipe. 
 
Unbolted the manifolds from both heads and then removed the heads one at a time, prying the manifold just enough to clear the studs.
 
I'm sure it would have been easier with the manifolds off the Y pipe, but this car was sitting in mud, so there was NO access to the bottom.
