OK.  This canister thingy is mounted on the passenger side of the fender of my 76 NYB.
It has an electrical line that dissapears into the firewall and a vacuum line.
Can I send this thing to trash bin?

You need it to open the trunk with the engine off.

I was just informed by some members over at the New Yorker Yahoo Group that it is the vacuum resevoir for the ATC system.

All vacuum (low pressure) systems might need a reservoir as in the case of a comressed air system.  Without the reservoir, there is very little ability to stroke a piston or like device.
