Title: firedome's new Mope: the St Reeege!
Post by: firedome on November 08, 2008, 11:38:10 AM
OK - If all goes right, by this Thursday I'll be picking up a 1980
Dodge St. Regis!!! This is the R-body (a slightly stretched - 1 inch
longer wheelbase - B-body, Coronet/Monaco etc), essentially a
'77/78 small Monaco, but with squared off styling and much better
ergonomic use of space inside... this one is a 56k mile, old lady
one-owner car, pretty nice all original, white with plush Navy velour
interior... this model was the only R body with the retractable
headligjht covers like the '78 Magnum.  It will be even better
with some detailing... For those that haven't driven one, these are
great cars,!! They look kind of formal, much like the downsized GM
full-size cars of the late '70s, but the squared off lines made them
much more functional and user friendlythan the discontinued-for-'79 B
Bodies, with all the room inside of the older C Bodies, Polara, Royal
Monaco etc,  but with improved handling and gas mileage, with /6,
318 or 360 engines. They also got the Electronic Spark Control right by
'80, after the Lean Burn fiasco of 76/77... This one has the 318 2 bbl,
as did my late lamented '79 Newport... my '80 NYer that I had in the
early '90s had the 360.  They can get 20/21 mpg on the highway,
thanks to the lockup torque converter. I've really missed driving one,
so been looking for another... it won't ever be mistaken for a true
collector car...except maybe by cop-car lovers, the majority of these
Rs were sold to cop fleets...but for an all around family car, for
those of us who just like driving big older Mopes, R bodies can't be
beat!!  If you see a good one, I encourage you to check it out!!!

I recall there's a guy who's occasionally on here with a R-body NYer...  I'll post some pics when I get her home!!(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif)(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

The R's are the lost step child and Iacocca killed it off after a three model year run to save the company. Leaviing the F/M/J platforms to hold the RWD candle for Mopar customers
With very poor sales, fewer choices (READ:Gimme a K car or ummm...a K car), and the Lean Burn System is what had people flocking to buy the downsized GM cars.Electronic Spark Control was just another name for it,IMO.
I call it junk.
Chrysler was blowing all its money on this crappy system to meet emission standards and I still believe it was one of the major reasons it put Chrysler under.
I owned a 1980 NY'er 5th Ave edition.Nice riding car.Mine had the power sunroof.Pig on gas but handled well and very nice smooth ride.
Lighter and nimble than a Formal, and the two extra inches on the B body wheel base makes it feel like a full sized car.The best of B and C cars all in one.
A refined automobile than did not get a chance to really catch on like the GM cars.
Chrysler ---like other car companies--once they get it right, they stop makin' em.

Firedome, I wish you the very best with your new St. Regis. I remember them...Yes, they didn't make that line for too long...They should have though....Chrysler went down hill after that, although the K-car actually saved the company. The K-car was the first of the throw aways. It sounds like a beautiful car ...a real creampuff! I'm happy for you...enjoy (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

Thanks guys- Lea - you have it right - IMO it was the best of the C
& B body cars combined... I had a s..tload of problens with Lean
Burn on my '76 Gran Fury and Newport 400 cu in cars, but none of the
Electronic Spark Control (aka Lean Burn II I suppose) R-body  cars
that I had gave me any problems at all! I kinda figured that maybe they
got it right on try 2.0.... for some reason my '77 Gran Fury 360 didn't
have Lean Burn... I drove that car for 10 years!!!

Right up to 1989,the Electronic Spark Control unit was updated adding on more garbage as time went by.But still the same basic system.
I am running my 87 Dippy without the control and converted it to electronic ignition.I gained more MPG and power by doing so.

Lea: What did that involve as far as time, parts and expense? If I can eliminate the ESC, simple is always better!

No - it won't get here until Thursday, I'll get pics  - meantime
just Google "Dodge St Regis" or even better - look at the
"R-body"  page on Allpar.com... the web's best source for all
around info on old Mopars... good article there.

Sorry I have seen those cars, but only a hand full mostly at Carlisle. They are nice looking cars, never rode in one.

There's a great write up on the police fleet R-bodies on
Allpar.com.  . I remember seeing some R body taxicabs in the City
too...  along with all those Checkers that were still being made
back then.  The 'ol /6 made for a great taxicab engine.
