Title: Lookee what I got....
Post by: R. Dave Carr on October 01, 2008, 04:19:11 PM
Well I had been on the fence for quite a while about what I was going to do for wheels on the 300.  I knew I had to go to 15's to accomodate the disc brake set up I'm planning on doing.  I thought about a set of Torq thrust, but the cost was over 600 for a set of those.  After all, I'm trying to do this on a shoestring budget.   I thought about cheap modular wheels, but those just didn't seem to belong on my car.  I came across a '66 New Yorker that had Budd brakes, and a set of 15" Chrysler disc brake hubcaps.  I liekd the look of those since they are period correct for my car.   While I like the looks of mag wheels, there something about them that makes me think "hot rod" and that's not the look I want for my 300.  I want somethign more in line with a "boulevard cruiser" look.  So, I got to wandering around E-bay, and scored these this evening:

Carrman, grab a set of plain 15X7" steel wheels off a 5TH Ave or Diplomat. They are cheap and still plentiful in wrecking yards.
Run 2357015 or 2357515 tires if you want to stick with a whitewall.

Good score, but what Pi$$e$ me off is that I recently put on several nice hubcaps and  a set of Imperial caps and no one was bidding! I'll have to try again I guess.....

Lea, I do plan on keeping whitewalls since I scored the hubcaps.

Those are TQ Originals, I said D's.  On that same site I saw this:

Note that they are a mixed set and for Chevy.  I think the TQ D is the greatest wheel ever made, but a set for my car - new - is over $750.00.

The difference is in the "bowing" of the wheel centers.  The TTO center is flat, where the TTD is bowed to allow for disk brakes.  Thus, Torque-Thrust D = Disk.  The original wheel is being made again, but is designated "original."  They look very similar.  No spacers are needed with a "D" if you have disk brakes.

My favorite wheels!  Alas, they remain bloddy expensive!  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)

I talked with a rep from American Racing.  He said with current demand the price will not drop any time soon.  There is, or was last May, a six-month back-log of orders for 15x7" Ds, the size I want.

I bought the "Shelby California 500s" I have on my car for $200.00 at a swap meet.  Guess I gotta' stick with those for now.  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)
