Title: 1957 Dodge D500 2 door sedan
Post by: Robert Rottman on September 23, 2008, 05:57:30 AM
Hey guys, There's a guy in my area that claims he has one of these...and that it's the real deal... He bought it at an local estate auction. Are these rare? I would think most of the D500 cars were hardtops. Any body have production totals for 1957 Dodge? He says it's all original right down to the paint/interior/chrome...the dual quads everything. He's planning to resell...I'd like to be ready and up to speed on the details before he does...Thanks, Bob

A two-door seedan makes me think police car with that engine package.  I'm not the resident fin-car expert but I thought the D500 Custom Royal Lancers were all hard-tops or convertibles.

Yeah, I looked around on the internet last night and did find a few things on it. The police cars got the Super D500 package...not sure what this means other than more horsepower...but it was a step up from the D500 offered to the public. This guy is calling it a 325 ci Hemi with dual quads. I myself did not know the Hemi was a 325 ci... I thought the Hemis were 354 ci and larger. I thought the 325 ci was the "red ram". Hopefully someone here with some knowledge on these will reply. Also, the car is turquois and white and supposedly the paint codes on the car matches the colors....so I don't think it's a former police car. Who knows though...Anything is possible after 50+ years.

The 1957 D-500 was a 325 Hemi with a single 4 bbl carb and 285 hp. The Super D-500 was the same but with dual 4 bbls and 310 hp. There was also a D-501 which was the 354 dual 4 bbl that had 340 hp. This was a mid-year offering.
There were 500 D-500 dual carb 325 Hemis planned and approx. 101 D-501 Hemis were built.
These weren't called police packages, just higher performance packages available on the entire series of Dodges in 1957. The car was available in a 2 door club sedan.

Thanks stitcherbob, I appreciate the info. So it looks like this car is a Super D-500 since it has dual quads. They could have been added later though. And only 500 of these were planned?....If the carbs are original to the car, (I don't know how anyone would know for sure other than decoding the tags on the car...) do you know what this car would be worth if it's actually what the guy says it is....0 rust ever....all original...no abuse, 51,000 miles etc. Remember it's a post car not a hardtop unfortunately...I've looked at NADA, Gold, Col. Car Market Review....they're all over the place....from $5,000-11,000....add 20-30% for D500 package. Some don't even list a 325 engine for that year Coronet.
Thanks,
Bob

The Chrysler Corp. used several different motors for each division, thus no 331 Dodge and no 325 Chrysler, etc.  Such was very common in the 50s for all manufacturers.

The D-500 series was built mainly to homogolate the Nascar stuff back in the day where they had to build a minimum of 500 cars to allow the car on the track. The D-500 designation was available on any body style,so the Dodge camp can use a loophole to say that indeed there are 500 plus of these "packages" "out there".
Regardless, the car you are enquiring about is a rare bird indeed.Especially when you factor in that the car was overshadowed by its big brother Chrysler 300 letter series cars.Plus Plymouth was out selling Dodge at that time as well.
1957 also saw a  ban on all open factory participation in racing.
A D-500 equipped Dodge won its class at the Daytona speed trials clocking a flying mile at 130.577 MPH
This was overshadowed and beat by a 300C with a speed of 134 MPH.

Very cool info guys and a neat car by the sounds of it.

As for value...well that's a tough one, due to it's rarity and if the car is as original and rust free and in good shape them I can't see why it wouldn't be worth $10K???

As for Hemi engine sizes...I believe the smallest hemi was a desoto 231 red ram hemi and then there were a host of odd ball sizes over the years.

The D-501 sounds like a Chrysler 354 shoehorned into the Dodge.....now you better look that car over carefully! Take a measuring tape with ya...

Yeah I was salivating too...now I'm really bummed. I got into work this morning only to find an e-mail from him saying that "he took a deposit on the d500" last night! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif) I didn't even get a chance to look at it!! I knew I needed to get over there ASAP....I tried calling him on his cell phone yesterday...but kept getting a recording that the number is no longer in service/has been disconnected. He's also selling a Junk-Bucket I guess....and some guy came over to look at it .....apparently he also saw the Dodge and talked this guy into selling it to him. I can't believe it...It will take some time to get over this debacle....I have to keep telling myself that it just wasn't meant to be. I wish I'd never heard about the car now.

C'mon now.  One owner, barn find. All documentation, 0 original miles.
47 year old survivor, mint condition.  Original paint faded but with good buffing could be show piece. Inspection invited.  Ask questions before bidding.

You know....I was talking to my wife last night about it. She said it sounded very fishy too....The guy didn't want to set up an appt. when I called him at his home the previous night, but says "call me on my cell phone tomorrow" and then when I called, the cell phone service had a recording saying "the number has been disconnected/out of service". Also the same night...now that I think about it...he did try to divert attention to his other cars he has for sale. Who knows...perhaps he has a fake ad in Craigslist to get some attention on his other junk he has for sale?? I know I wouldn't have the stones to do something like that...I woke up at 4:00 AM last night and couldn't get it off my mind....couldn't get back to sleep. It's bad when a hobby/cars get a hold of you so much. I would just like to enjoy what I have and not get obsessed with finding more. Anyone else have this struggle? I mean really.... When all is said and done and this life is over I want to be remembered for my love for others, my love for my Creator and my desire to live by HIS standards...not for my love of cars....(although obviously I do enjoy them) We certainly can use the hobby though to show our love to others, but how easy it is (at least for me) to let it get out of hand. I'm getting over it...time helps and you guys certainly help too. Thanks to all...The responses from all of you are great..

I crawl all over the internet daily, read all the publications, constantly have my radar on high alert, all for the sake of scoring the "big one".  Day and night, week after week, year after year, I can't break away from it.  During my 35 years fo driving a truck, I sacanned the landscape constantly for a diamond in the rough lanquishing in the side yard.  I passed by desrted barns imagining of hitting the the mother lode.  I came ever so close once in a junkyard in a remote section of PA with Harleys once.  It's a sickness worse than being addicted to crack or obsessed with sex.
Just yesterday I was was clearing 8' weeds and brush, getting bitten to death by bugs and watching for snakes and other critters, clearing a path to a '75 New Yorker that you couldn't see from 20' away.

That's the way I found my '68 NYer!  Had I not been led through the corn field I never would have found it.

A half-hour later, new water pump and fresh gas installed, it was ready to drive home.

I was finding different routes to work so I could scan backyards and open garage doors for another 73 Imperial like I had when I was 18. It was all I could think about.  Then a miracle happened: Stan found my current one on the Ebay and Polaraco snagged it for me, and then Butch went and got it  (plus babysat it for months in Kentucky) until Steve & I could pick it up....well now you see how far the "sickness" can take you. And I doubt any of us could give it up.
I still look in backyards and garages, though.......(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

The Creator gave you this love of a inanimate object (that leaks fluids into your newly paved driveway, causes strife in married life, costs you all of your money, causes social inclusion or rejection, and draws a few pints of blood from you every so often) for a reason....it's a reflection on how normal life functions!
So remember to thank Him for that!

Just finished talking with my wife about old MOPAR fin cars. She likes the 57-58 Plymouth 2 door hardtop (Belvederes) the best...AND so do I....59 Dodges second best...love those eyebrows over the headlights... Anyways...I showed her a red 58 Belvedere on carsonline.com that's $35,000.00 and she said get it! You might as well spend some of the money in our portfolio before its all gone. With all the subprime/bank/wall street problems our portfolio has really suffered the last several months. Now don't I have the best wife in the whole world? Even though she has given me the go ahead (and I know she was dead serious) I still couldn't spend that kind of money....I might be able to spend 20kish though?! Anyone know of any for sale? Must be good solid, straight and need next to nothing. She does not want me to get another project car. I know shes right..I've been there/done that too many times now.  I found the forward look site tonight...pretty interesting...Wish I'd known about it a few months ago. There were some nice "deals" in there just a little while ago.

Some of the Forward guys can be brash and are extremely opinionated.
They are bashing Miss Belvedere something awful and are taking personal jabs at people involved.
Be careful.
If you go for the car, enjoy it.
Just dont bother the Forward Look site,IMO.
We are Moparfins and will support you all the way in anything Mopar. We are here for YOU!
Despite a slow market,I believe Miss Belvedere is bringing attention to the Finned cars..gaining people's interest.

Just like with any site, there'a a lot of BS, and also some good help
and knowledge to be had at Forward Look... you have to remember: caveat
emptor - let the User beware, in this case.  I have had some
positive and some negative experiences there - kinda like life!
you gotta pay to play: nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I've preferred mainly the Fin cars since they came out, and owned 'em
since 1979. As far as '58 Belvys or Furys, you picked a pricey example
of the FL cars because of the movie. And kinda overxposed IMO for the
same reason, but a very pretty car. One of the acknowledged experts on
the Christine website - Donnie in Tennessee - could probably line you
up with one of those. He's one of the good guys.
