Title: Which transmission will bolt up?
Post by: Steve on July 28, 2008, 02:00:03 PM
What transmissions will bolt up to a 5.7 Hemi?

With these new after market computers, I've been thinking about maybe putting a 5.7 into Polaraco.  If it will bolt to my 518, then it will be pretty easy to do.

The only thing is, I want the MDS system as well.  That would give me MPG and all the awsome power I could ask for.  I'm still convinced my HP vs. weight is still a bit light.

There have been some articles on this adaptation in some recent magazines.  However, I could not tell you the answer, sorry.  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)

A recent edition of "Engine Masters" had some articles on using the new Hemi.  See if you can find a copy.

Automatic: The DaimlerChrysler engineers were nice
enough to leave most of the small block bolt pattern in tact.
What that means for you is that any 727 or 904 type
transmission will bolt up to the new HEMI. See below for
suggested Mopar Performance parts to assist with the
install.

Thanks a lot Stan...now either the Polaraco will never be finished or the Virgin 15,000 mile 72 Polara will be ravaged with a 5.7 Hemi transplant.....

It's all on your shoulders......

Not that I'm a Moparts.com fan, but there is some good info there if you can get through all the narcissism and ego.  I have seen a few conversion threads there.

Here's one:

Rich Eherenberg confirmed it is available in the aftermarket ECM.s

As far as ravaging the Virgin. . . .  It is definitely a likely candidate for the job. . . Here again, it would be the one of a kind car in the world.  Rich said "Ahhh It's  C body!".  But I told him a 5.7 would give the Savoy a run for it's money then.

Overall, it's a good idea.  Find another 518 trans, make the safety mods to the steering and brakes and have a rust free sleeper.  I wonder if I could send my interior up town and get it done faster? No No!  I'm all for modifying cars, but cars that are high-milage or are otherwise POS rolling hulks.  Don't do that to a 17,000 mile car!

Years ago Hot Rod took a pristine '57 Imperial, with 32,000 miles, and cut the top off and modified the car.  I'm still not over it!  There are plenty of candidates for this work, not a pristine car.

Steve, please, no!

I have to admit I'm in favor of a clean 5.7 conversion into a 4-dr C-body.  It will make jealous / piss off the A-B-E guys, and I think that is a worthwhile thing to do.(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)

Of course I can imagine the prospect for Polaraco to do this, because I personally lack the time, talent, inclination, enthusiasm, skill , determination, perseverence, etc, to do such a project.

Nahhhh

You can if you think you can

I still haven't gotten a firm answer if a 518 will bolt right  though.  I think Rich said yes, but I have to check with him .

I agree, but use a high-mileage car in need of work, not a 17,000 mile original.

I agree they can be original only once, but let's face it, it will still be in good condition, still be a time capsule, and would have a powerful, fuel-efficient engine.  Some folks would say that's a win-win.  (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)

Also, in doing this on a car in poorer condition could add another $5000 to the overall cost - he's got to buy another car, then perhaps do rust repair, paint, interior, brakes, etc.  Plus he has another car to store and take care of.

And based on Polaraco's past effort with the Maggie, this car would turn out fabulous.

There's pros and cons boys.

First let's get the answer to the original question.  I have to figure out what this wil cost..

Yes....A 518 will bolt up.   As long as it's a SB bolt pattern they'll all bolt up,   518, 904, 727 etc.

Takes a conversion plate for the converter if I remember right is all.    Check these guys out....
http://www.hotrodlane.cc/ (http://www.hotrodlane.cc/)

They've done dozens of conversions & have it all worked out.    Their latest catalog shows a 6.1 into a 66 Belvedere that had a 318/727.   They used the original SB 727 in that one.

They have mounts for the popular cars but if you look at what they've made it wouldn't be hard to make em' for the C-body.    Oil pans are usually changed to a Charlies unit since the stock Hemi won't work in our old chassis.   Gotta watch what oil pump  style is on the motor, the Truck versions seem to fit better from reading thru, thry're angled slightly.    The drive-by-wire is an issue to be addressed but they ust the Signal conversionbox with a Lokar cable to run it.

They tell you tomake sure to get the Vin # off the vehicle you pull the 5.7 out of for info on later programming & maybe wiring support.

They sell complete packages or just support for a JY engine swap,   Saw them at the SR nats & got a catalog.    Lots of good info there.  Call em' up & get a catalog just to look & maybe pick their brain some.    Would get ya info what issues you'd have with the swap before hand.

Oh,  yes the trucks got the MDS around 05' I think.    Might be 06, we've got a relative that bought a used 1500 & it has it but I never got an exact year.

Butch
