Title: van gas tank not venting?
Post by: Dan Cluley on June 23, 2008, 01:42:34 AM
1997 Dodge B3500 Van.

We were smelling gas sometimes, so the owner took it to a shop.  They dropped the tank, found the fuel pump was not completely tightened into the tank, and fixed that.

Now, when putting gas in, the pump shuts off after every 1/2 gallon or so, and it sounds like air coming out of the filler pipe.

I'm guessing there  is a vent pipe somewhere that got pinched?

Before I just start poking around, does anyone know where/how these tanks are supposed to be vented.

Thanks,
Dan

Thay have a roll over system in them for one thing.  But if it follows suit, everything goes to the charcoal canister in the front.  Somewhere there is a check valve for the roll over.  It would be in the back if anywhere. . . . Maybe he put the lines on wrong?  Or he put the roll over valve in backwards.

Maybe the problem was there before and caused the tank to vent through the pump seat or caused it to loosen it from flexing. . . .

I have a manual for a 92.  I'll look

Perhaps the previous owner was having the same problem and loosening up the pump "cured" it?  There should be a few vent tubes/hoses on the tank.  I have found some where previous owners pull the hose and put a nipple on the vent end.  Are all of the ones on this tank connected?

No, the gas pump was just sloppy work by some shop a couple of months ago(http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif)

The problem was the rubber hose that goes from the vent near the tank top to the filler tube.  It had a kink in it that was obviously blocking most of the air from escaping.

I like simple problems. (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)
