Title: Substitute for Type A trans fluid
Post by: Paul on June 10, 2008, 03:27:01 AM
I need to refill my transmission after draining and changing lines and filter.  Since Type A is no longer available, what is the recommended replacement?   Will it be compatible with what is still left in the transmission?  Thanks

Most people are using Dextron 3 or 4 with no problems at all.

Type A should be indicated on the bottle in the ratings.  Boy I remember thise days when you had 2 types.  A and F.

I can relate to that, I've been cleaning out the crap in my garage and came across 3 NOS cans of type "A".  I stacked them beside the NOS spark plugs, points and air cleaner filter that I bought in about 1978. Look up "old pack-rat" in a dictionary and you might find a picture of me! (http://www.moparfins.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

Type III Mercon replaced the others back in the '70s, so use a good brand Dextron Mercon III transmission fluid.  They are all compatible.  The Mercon IV is a semi-synthetic so DON'T do that!

Do you remember when Fhord used the "FA" tranny fluid?  Mercon II, then Mercon III replaced that too....

Type +3 and Mercon 5 are for newer OD trannys.

Mercon III is recommended by Chrysler manuals.  It's good stuff.  However,  I recently did a filter and fluid change on my buddy's V-6 Sebring, and the stuf I put in smelled worse than the stuff that came out.  It was gross!

Anyone else ever notice this?
